Can't judge a book...

Can't judge a book... Bo Diddley used to sing, "by lookin' at the cover."

Or, it seems, even by reading the title!

Happy 39th birthday to television and film actor Sean Patrick Thomas who, we learn, is not a scion of the auld sod, but a gentleman of color born in the District of Columbia to Guyanese immigrant parents.

And I didn't know any of that.

"You can't tell an apple, lookin' at the tree;
Can't tell the honey, lookin at the bee;
Can't tell the sista', lookin' at the brotha'
Can't tell a book now, lookin' at the cover"
I think Willie Dixon wrote the song and it's so true.

While you have those lyrics a tad garbled, it doesn't matter much.

Dixon, compared to Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry and, later, Etta James, was one of the lesser-known luminaries at legendary Chess Records. But he was probably their true renaissance man: bass sideman, vocalist, songwriter, arranger and record producer.

There was a terrific film, "Cadillac Records," released a year ago, that chronicles a somewhat "selective" account of that Chicago blues scene. Rent it at Netflix.

I worked with Bo a few times and he was demanding yet delightful... when I saw your headline thought you were plugging my book that includes a chapter on my times with Bo, as well as Elvis and Michael Jackson to name a few!

Now you know I never plus your book!
