Quote du jour

From the BBC:

Remains of Gulf War pilot found

Then there's this from U.S. Navy spokesman Commander Cappy Surette:

"This is a testament to how the Navy never stops looking for one of its own. No matter how long it takes."

One can but wonder if spokespersons have any sense of how vacuous they sound in the utterance of an "official statement."

Which is not to diminish any sense of closure and comfort felt by the now-college age children, Meghan and Michael, of Captain Michael Scott Speicher of Jacksonville, Florida.

They've been through a great deal over the years, not the least of which was President Bill Clinton's January 11, 2001 statement:

"We have some information that leads us to believe he might be alive."

Hours later Clinton backed and filled:

"Well, I don't want to say more than we have. All I want to say is we have evidence which convinced me that we can't ensure that he perished. I don't want to hold out false hope, but I thought it was wrong to continue to classify him as killed in action when he might not have been."

Michael Speicher's remains have been found and positively identified; all that remains now is for the Navy pilot to be re-interred stateside.

The Navy and Pentagon should just shut up.
