11977 Hiring Hall

Whoever thought it would come to this?

These are from 7:50 this very morning at the Mill Road 7-Eleven in Westhampton.

7-Eleven, Westhampton 7-Eleven, Westhampton 7-Eleven, Westhampton 7-Eleven, Westhampton

(Not readily apparent in the last photo are a number of hopeful hirees beneath the overhang by the no trespassing sign. Perhaps they are all coffee customers.)

I am reminded of the words of the late Bishop S.C. Johnson (1897-1961) of the First Church of the Apostolic Faith in one of his passionate and entertaining radio broadcasts, circa Spring 1960:

"Charity should begin at home since that's where most poverty starts as well."

That may not have been an original thought, but it was the first time I heard it, and it has stuck with me all these years.

What is the history of this? When did it start and why in that spot? I believe my fellow Hurricane classmate Joe DiVito owns or did own that 7-Eleven. What are his feelings on this? A few more cups of java sold? What would happen if an immigration officer showed up?

Cogent questions all... and ones to which I don't have answers.

However, I do know that several years back that 7-Eleven had employed a private security guard to keep anyone from loitering in front of the store so that legitimate customers had free and safe passage in and out of the store. I guess it got too expensive to maintain.

But if "charity" pays no taxes and takes jobs from the legal young of the American parents currently unemployed, should they be hired? No.

Stop lying on your taxes, folks, and hire the insured and bona fide Americans who need work. We can't support everybody, and your neighbor needs your help first.

A tale of two 7-Eleven's. All of one mile apart. One is in Westhampton Beach Village - the other in Southampton Town.

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness."

Go figure - one mile away!

And what are we to make of this?

Clearly one government entity says we will not accept "hiring halls" and another that seemingly turns a blind eye to it. Why? I have no idea.
