The Story Line...

...of tonight's NCAA Championship game pitting underdog (7½ points) Michigan State against North Carolina has a great deal to do with the Nation's economy.

The game is in Detroit (which, when I lived there, was in Michigan), a/k/a "Motor City" because of its historical ties with the American automotive industry, under whose tent President Barack Obama recently stuck his Administration's nose if not its entire upper torso.

Some will see tonight's contest as a metaphoric talisman for the recovery of the stricken car-makers... if the Spartans pull off the upset, the economy, led by Chrysler and General Motors, will turn around. If the Tar Heels prevail as expected, the economic downturn may continue, and since we're talkin' regional industry here, tobacco could make a resurgence.

Silly basis for prognostications?

Probably... but that won't stop the pundits from using it as a "story line," especially if Michigan State wins.

The game is being telecast live from Ford Field on CBS starting a little after 9:00 pm.

Who do I like?

As Damon Runyon noted nearly a century ago:

"The race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, but that's the way to bet."

But since I'm no longer a betting man, I'll take the "dog" just for interest's sake.
