What are they thinking?

...or, "What a difference a year makes!"

Passed the old Library yesterday afternoon... or actually, the excavated lot where the old Library stood for so many decades.

There used to be a Library here...

And, with its $7,827,820 bonded price tag, it occurs to me that the odds and sods on the Westhampton Free Library's Board of Trustees hit just the right time for their approval vote... it's doubtful whether such an expensive proposition could pass this year.

In this economy, I daresay that neither the Library bond nor the shameful repurposing of the Westhampton Beach School District's $800,000 surplus, would get voter approval today.

(It is noted that "Union Free" apparently is being phased out of the District's name... and high time, too!)

The "they" in the header being the Remsenburg-Speonk Union Free School{sic} District Board of Education, one might surmise that they looked Eastward last year, saw what had transpired with the WFL and School District votes, and concluded, "Hey!, we can do that!"

As Dave Willmott used to say, and why not?

Look at the property tax base of the Remsenburg-Speonk area... well, Remsenburg and West Hampton{sic} Dunes, at least. I mean, what's $14.9 million for a badly-needed school expansion project?

Hey!, it's for the children! Don't think about it on Friday, December 12th, just flip the "yes" lever.

Right! Put the District into hock for an additional $1.2 million a year, including interest, for the next 20 years to make room for a 400-student school that is presently serving less than half that number!

Just where are those children coming from?!? Nidzyn Avenue? West Hampton{sic} Dunes? Guatemala?

This isn't 2007... Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs ain't investment banks no mo'. Each has undertaken some major re-thinking.

The Remsenburg-Speonk School District needs to do so as well.

Wow! That picture is so depressing; The destruction of a beautiful building, and expensive plans on erecting a huge edifice to Joanie Levan's and Clint Greenbaums's egos and legacy, with our money -- when every child within five years will have a laptop and a WiFi connection to the world. This was NOT for the children.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Thanks for posting this, Dean. I was just thinking about those spendthrift scalliwags today as the Dow dipped under 8000.

"Remsenburghers," show you have more sense!
