Goodness Gracious!

What have we here in today's Newsday?

Quogue mayor indicted
on securities fraud

While it's not the indictment we expected, this should come as no surprise. Mayor Motz was the subject of an investigation over a year ago as detailed in a February 2007 SEC document.

What amused, though, was the statement Mayor Motz' attorney made to the press:

"George Motz is innocent, and he is looking forward to his day in court where all the facts are presented, not just the ... allegations of the government."

Don't all attorneys make similar pronouncements... even when their best hope is that 18-24 months from now their client will accept a desperately negotiated plea limiting their jail time to 5-7 years?

It's not dissimilar to that which the Muchnicks' attorney, Andrew J. Campanelli, and I were jousting over in yesterday's Bears Watching Comments.

I laughed out loud when I read this line in the article this morning:

"Reached at his Quogue home last night, Mayor George Motz said that he was unaware of the federal indictment a grand jury issued in Brooklyn."
Are you kidding me? He was unaware of the indictment? Might be time to get a new lawyer, George, if you're learning things from Newsday reporters.
Yes, there is that! Good catch.

Good Morning Dean....

It's going to have to be if you keep this up - Westhampton Beach is too small for a world class blogger like you.

500K bail makes him look pretty innocent to me.... let's see how his next court date goes in September.

Good morning right back, #9.

We had no idea that you were so familiar with the nuances of (allegations of) "white collar crime" that you could assess the strength of the Government's case based on the level of bail required!

Do you think they took his passport? Do you think he should retain Joel Cohen to represent him in this matter? Do you think there was even a tremor felt in Quogue?
