Why is this guy skating on...

Democratic Senator Dick Durbin

...the highly divisive "shithole countries" characterization that dominated the news cycle ten days ago and thereafter?

He is Senator Dick Durbin (D, Illinois), the sole member of his party to attend a small closed door White House January 11 meeting, called ostensibly to discuss the contentious and highly partisan issue of immigration.

Leaving the meeting, Durbin raced to the first microphone he could find and reported to an eager media that the President of the United States had referred to certain third world nations in a crudely pejorative manner.

"Why do we want all these people from 'shithole countries' coming here?"

CNN reported:

"One person briefed on the meeting said when Durbin got to Haiti, Trump began to ask why we want people from Haiti and more Africans in the US and added that the US should get more people from countries like Norway."

With this as chum upon the waters, there was a media feeding frenzy that lasted not just well into the next week but led to a Congressional Hearing on the matter.

The effect of this hubbub was to bring any Congressional action on immigration reform, border security, and DACA's "dreamers," to a screeching halt!

There ensued endless nattering about what was reported, arguments about what was actually said, and a lot of posturing by politicians on both sides of the aisle as the Government crept towards a shutdown that just ended while this OtBB entry was being prepared.

The one question that no one (and that includes on the Sunday morning news programs) has posed to Senator Durbin:

Cui bono?

Not by this weekend's shutdown, but from trying to embarrass the unembarrassable President by reporting the language he supposedly used behind closed doors.

Durbin certainly raised his political profile and garnered National face-time on TV.

But seriously, in what way did the country benefit from Durbin's leak?
