On, brave old Army team!

I'm an "Army brat," and have been since I was sixteen months old... so when it came to college football, have always rooted for the team from the United States Military Academy at West Point (NY).

(My father didn't attend "The Point," but since MIT hadn't fielded a football team since 1900....)

The "Black Knights of the Hudson" were worthy of my interest when I was a youngster, six undefeated seasons between 1943 and 1958, and in that time featured three Heisman Trophy winners in the persons of "Doc" Blanchard (1945), Glenn Davis (1946) and Pete Dawkins (1958).

Late this afternoon Army won its 10th game of the season for only the second time in its 127-year history, beating San Diego State 42-35 on a two-point conversion with 18 seconds left, to win the 2017 Armed Forces Bowl.

(San Diego State tried a "hot potato" lateral play on the last play of the game, and a wild toss backwards was intercepted by Army and run back for a score as the final gun sounded.)

It was something of a throwback game, primarily end runs and off-tackle plunges, and precious little passing by either team... Army actually controlled possession of the ball for an even 48 of the 60 minutes played!

The last service academy player to win the Heisman was Navy's Roger Staubach in 1963, and when I think of some of the recent winners (Johnny Manziel and Baker Mayfield come to mind), it's unfortunate that players like Army's record-setting quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw, who never gave the finger to a television audience or had a drunken confrontation with the police, is ignored.

Go Army, always!
