Winterfest flops... the undefeated, championship Westhampton Beach Hurricane football team ruled the day!

Arriving by flatbed as the celebratory parade progressed from Mill Road along Main Street, the victorious team...

...took an unexplained detour before bursting onto the Great Lawn to be individually recognized as they ascended the mobile bandstand on loan from Southampton Town.

As the team jogged in, all-everything running back Dylan Laube was carrying the Hansen Trophy for which he was co-recipient, the first local player ever honored in the 58 years of the award named for Westhampton Beach's much revered Carl Hansen, my old grade school gym teacher.

Winter or not, there was a good crowd with not only 'Cane supporters and parents, but a smattering of dignitaries... yes, there were cameras aplenty, so of course Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman showed up.

Also on the Great Lawn, once the bucolic grazing pasture of Thurston Raynor's cows were some complimentary refreshmennts courtesy of Hurricane Deli, Justin's Chop Shop and Chick-fil-a.

In all, a nice, albeit minor, event honoring some local teens who've brought honor to the area.

"Winterfest" [sigh]

A curiosity is the evaporation of the Greater Westhampton Chamber of Commerce's twice-postponed "Winterfest" promotion.

There's irony in having an event ostensibly celebrating Winter being, effectively, canceled because of... too much Winter.

I suspect that is just one more incident that will give impetus to the rebirth of an alternative business association more focussed on Westhampton Beach's downtown area.
