It's a (modest) start!

At first glance of the following headline on 27East, a common response would be, "'Bout damn'd time!"

ICE Agents Apprehend Individuals In Sag Harbor And Hampton Bays During Islandwide Sting

"Officers targeted undocumented individuals who had been convicted of aggravated DWI, second-degree assault, second-degree criminal trespassing, driving while intoxicated and driving while ability impaired."

While none of the charges rise to the level of those leveled against MS-13 members, it's an action that was not on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's agenda ever since Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone signaled his softness on immigration.

Further OtBB research revealed some of the details of the recent ICE interdictions:

  • A 41-year-old previously deported Guatemalan male, convicted of driving while intoxicated, was arrested in Patchogue.
  • A 40-year-old previously removed Brazilian male convicted of driving while intoxicated, was arrested in Ronkonkoma.
  • A 31-year-old Guatemalan male with prior convictions of criminal trespass and driving while ability impaired, was arrested in Riverhead.
  • A 35-year-old previously removed Honduran man with prior conviction of assault in the 3rd degree, was arrested in Hempstead.
  • A 40-year-old Salvadoran national with a prior conviction of driving while intoxicated and identified as a MS-13 gang member, was arrested in Shirley.

(All will remain in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.)

Now, should the Westhampton area feel slighted by ICE's inattention to its problems with "undocumented Americans?"

The best answer can be found in the weekly Police Blotter and DWI Arrests columns of The Southampton Press Western Edition.
