AFC/CBS v. NFC/Fox

...we're talking the pro football pre-game shows Sundays at Noon during football season and this one's an easy pick for me.

Regular OtBB readers are likely aware that I'm a 66+ year Detroit Lions fan from a time when there were only 12 professional teams in the country, and being something of a traditionalist, most would suspect that I'd be partial to "Fox NFL Sunday" anchored by Terry Bradshaw, but that immediately falls out of consideration because:

(Not even the positive presence of the likeable and knowledgable Howie Long can overcome the grating negatives.)

My pre-game preference is easily CBS' "NFL Today," hosted by James Brown with a panel that includes former NFL coach Bill Cowher and a pair of retired All-Pro quarterbacks, Phil Sims and Boomer Esiason.

They're professionals who know the game and keep the clowning around to a minimum... it's the best crew around, easily outclassing the curious mix of personalties on cable ESPN's Monday Night Countdown or NBC's derivitive Football Night in America.

(One major CBS minus: the addition of Jim Rome, a feculent commentator best known as the sawn-off punk whose big mouth provoked Jim Kelly to overturn a desk on him on his TV studio set.)

I tune in shows of this sort because I want good information, and the less shtick that comes with it, the better!

Thank you, CBS, for meeting my requirements.
