Harry Dean Stanton (1926-2017)

Harry Dean Stanton in "Cisco Pike" 1972

One of the best character actors I've ever had the pleasure of watching, passed away this afternoon of natural causes at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

More than just a craggy face, Harry Dean Stanton was seemingly incapable of a less than memorable performance in any of the 199 roles he assayed over a 63-year career before a television or movie lens.

As with other of his contemporaries (all of whom he had survived) like Warren Oates, Geoffrey Lewis or Ben Johnson, I knew that I was going to enjoy watching Stanton work, no matter the quality of the film or TV show.

Here's three of those great character actors in John Milius' 1973 "Dillinger:" [l-r] Oates, Stanton, Lewis and John Ryan.

And this terrific still in which Harry Dean comes face-to-the title-entity in "Alien;" what an expression!

"Alien" (1979)

Harry Dean, I'm gonna miss ya!
