In this week in 1939...

...I not only wasn't born, I wasn't yet conceived, but my father, two days shy of his 29th birthday, knew what this event portended.

Nazi Germany invades Poland

Employed as an actuary at Metropolitan Life Company, he was part of the ROTC from his years at MIT from which he'd graduated in 1932.

As the radio report came through that Friday, my father told my mother, "We... I am going to war, and we need to plan accordingly."

With me on the scene and my sister still five months from drawing her first breath, my father did go to war, just as he foresaw 29 months earlier.
