...through the digital wizardry of YouTube:
Johnny Carson's opening monologue is thin, and a prop sketch with his long-time side man Ed McMahon is flat, but his line-up of guests, Glen Campbell, Don Rickles, Dom DeLuise and Jimmy Breslin, is an odd mix indeed.
Campbell, a much more accomplished guitarist than I remember, is the real duck out of water as following his opening number he was invited to the couch and remained there, disrupting the show's organic flow at every opportunity.
Rickles does what his does best, even while fighting to overcome Campbell's outburst, and DeLuise managed to be funny while fending off Rickles and Campbell.
I don't think I'd ever seen Jimmy Breslin in this milieu before, but this appearance (promoting his "World without End, Amen") was but one of 15, and he acquitted himself admirably.
Of the above, only Campbell is still among us... Jimmy having passed away last month, and Rickles last week.
Campbell is among us physically but his dementia is quite advanced.
