So long, Mardy

Long time resident, Board of Education Member and former Southampton Town Supervisor Mardythe Di Pirro passed away on Sunday.

One of the brightest gals I'd ever heard speak at a meeting of a group of parents back in 1969, she was a quiet force in her community and her church for half-a-century.

One of her major accompishments, however, was beating, by a two-to-one margin, five-time Supervisor Marty Lange for the top job in Southampton Town in 1987.

A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, December 18, at 11:00 am at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Quoigue.

While Mrs. DiPirro may be identified by her positions on the school board and former Town Supervisor, she should more accurately be recognized as the truly nice, generous, kind person that she was. Her commitment to our community was truly commendable. I doubt she ever utttered an unkind word about anyone.

I had few bones to ever pick with Mardy, one being her as Supervisor falling for the "salting of the salamanders" trick in Water Mill to thwart a development project. I always thought she was brighter that that.

But she was exactly as you describe her.
