Heard something this morning...

...that I haven't heard in a loooooong time, the sound of a ship's foghorn from somewhere off-shore.

It's a sound that I grew up with when my Dad was posted to Fort Story on Virginia Beach with considerable maritine activity at that junction of the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean... the device itself was attached to the Cape Henry Lighthouse, and what a mournful sound it made... my father referred to it as "the dying cow."

I was in the backyard with the dogs when I heard it, several times, and given the gray mists in which we were enveloped, it was a comforting sound.

Dean, You are getting old if you're waxing nostalgic about the sound of a fog horn you remember from 60 years ago!

Never made any bones about getting old, #1, and, #2, it's closer to 70 years ago!

I heard it too while walking Lizzie the Wonderdog this morning. I'm here 30 years and never heard a fog horn before. Have you found the source?

Well, Michael, while I didn't rush right down to Rogers Beach to check out who was passing... wouldn't've done much good with operational visibility at less than 200 yards... my intelligence guided by my experience suggests that it was a fair-to-large size commercial vessel.

Or perhaps a kid in a 14 foot Boston Whaler cutting classes and out on a lark.

Was Donald Trump in town?

Nah, the sound wasn't that shrill.
