Let's Go Mets!

It is well-established that I am a long-time Dodgers fan... Flatbush or Chavez Ravine, they've been my baseball team and I've bled enough Dodgers Blue to give their one-time manager Tommy LaSorda a run for his devotion.

(We actually both started with "dem Bums" in 1949, and been with them ever since.)

And while I've been suffering with the Dodgers' streakiness this season, and generally ignoring the New York teams, I have to say that I've been enjoying the bejabbers out of the Mets of late... they are actually fun to watch!

The turn in the team's fortunes seem to coincide with the acquisition of Cuban native Yoenis Céspedes on the trade deadline of July 31st.

But I'm not going to go along with the absurd cry of the Flushing Meadow faithful that Céspedes is deserving of serious consideration of the National League's Most Valuable Player Award... hell, the outfielder had spent his entire Major league career in the American League until six weeks ago!

But there are notable similarities between Céspedes' arrival in New York and Manny Ramírez joining the Dodgers at the 2008 trade deadline and bringing them into the post-season.

Ramírez, who'd played himself out of Boston, settled down in Los Angeles, played 53 games, knocked in 53 runs, hit 17 home runs and batted .396... and finished 4th in the NL MVP voting behind Albert Pujols and Ryan Howard, one point behind Ryan Braun.

What the Mets need to do before signing Céspedes to a huge, Ramírez-type ruinous contract this off-season, is find out why such a talented player has been moved around so often in his brief time in the Majors.
