O, Eliot!

Entrepreneurial activity at work - click image
From today's New York Times:

"Mr. Spitzer has not been charged with a crime. But one law enforcement official who has been briefed on the case said that Mr. Spitzer’s lawyers would probably meet soon with federal prosecutors to discuss any possible legal exposure. The official said the discussions were likely to focus not on prostitution, but on how it was paid for: Whether the payments from Mr. Spitzer to the service were made in a way to conceal their purpose and source. That could amount to a crime called structuring, which carries a penalty of up to five years in prison."

"Structuring?" O my Gawd! Not "Structuring!" Anything but "Structuring!"

How could he?!? The man is no better than he ought to be!

Of interest is the reaction of long-time Spitzer cohort, Senator Charles Schumer (d, ny). People have been known to be trampled like rock concert-attendees in Cincinnati if they found themselves between Chuck and a microphone or television camera, but the Senator punted on this one even more than Hillary Clinton, for whom the New York Governor is a "Super Delagate."

On a local note, a friend who entered the local political wars several years ago, made it a point to get out in front when Mr. Spitzer was campaigning here for Governor in Fall 2006, with photos of the two of them together shaking hands and smiling for the camera, reasoning:

"If I help him now, when I run again and reach out to him, he'll have to help me."

I think he can be safely advised at this point to retire those photos.

Were Democrat politicians people of mettle, we would have seen a series of press conferences, including your friend, where each declared, "I AM CLIENT NUMBER NINE." Alas, the Dems are not so noble, and Spitzer is no Spartacus.

True Dems have quite the reputation... without naming names, high profile members include KKK members, murderers, adulterers and, to top it off, a scam artist is running for President.

I confess utter ignorance of your references here, but in keeping with OtBB Comments Policy, they are being published.

KKK Member Senator Byrd, Murderer Senator Kennedy, and last but not least Ms. Whitewater Hillary.

Aw, c'mon, TJB… you gotta give the Bum's Rush to Limbaugh and start listening to WFAN.

Sorry Dean, not a FAN of Rush or WFAN.

I think I've got to side with Mr. Berk on this one. Byrd was a Kleagle and an Exalted Cyclops (doncha love it!) in the Klan; Slick Willie is a serial adulterer; Hillary's cattle future trades and Rose Law Firm antics make "scam artist" appropriate; and Mary Jo Kopechne could not be reached for comment. But to be fair, the GOP has its share of problems too. They're just not as sanctimonious as the Dem leadership. Republicans caught in scandals tend to disappear. Democrats caught in scandals tend to rise to the top of the party.

But that Mr. Berk had made as impressive a statement in support of his mini-rant, Sir… in the words of Charles DeGaulle, "Je reste."
