I don't get it...

Early David Letterman

...and I'm afraid that I'm condemned to never get it... the "it" being the humor of the host of CBS' Late Show With David Letterman.

I've looked in on him on the odd occasion over the past four decades and he's never failed to leave me scratching my head wondering where the laughter was coming from with Letterman's bizarre antics and sudden outbursts of guffaws like someone with G-rated Tourette's disorder.

Particularly disturbing was that such displays invariably provoked great mirth from his studio audience, accompanied by a "What am I missing?" thought balloon popping up above my head.

This evening marks the final show of David Letterman's career... and I'm all right with that.

Ah, is there some particular reason that escapes the rest of us for the repeat of the first paagraph? Or is this an example of the "What am I missing?" thought process?

Usually my wife catches something like that... thanks for the sharp eyes.
