Memo to Maria, April 2015

From today's Southampton Press Western Edition, page A8:

Moore Unveils Her First Budget

(Similarly on

The draft budget totals $9.92 million, up $180,000, or 1.6%, over the budget adopted one year ago.

One part, relegated to the very end of Kyle Campbell's report was bothersome:

"Ms. Moore also suggested raising the stipends for the village's three appointed boards: Planning, Architecture Review and the Zoning Board of Appeals. Although no such increase was requested, she said it would be an act of good faith, as those stipends haven't been increased in several years. She proposed that the board member stipends be increased from $1,500 to $2,000, while each chairman's stipend would be bumped from $3,600 to $4,000, accounting for a total budgetary increase of $7,200."

Yeah, 'tis but a drop in the public trough, but if it wasn't requested, why was the increase proposed?

The whole idea of a stipend for the land use boards was inaugurated almost 30 years ago by the first Andon administration, and was intended more as a pourboire than anything else.

No one served for the money (and there were no medical benefits)... we served out of pride in, and love for, our Village, and made $125 quarterly, or $500 per annum... now Moore intends to up the current "stipend" 33% to $2000 per annum.

(The three Chairs originally received a little extra, but not double.)

Some may take the Joan Levan approach when, in 2007, the Dowager Empress of Oneck infamously argued with a resident, "You're just quibbling about pennies!"

But damnit, lady! It's not your money to play Fairy Godmother with!
