Gwynn death at 54 a caution

One of the top five pure hitters in Major League Baseball over the past 30 years, Tony Gwynn, passed away yesterday morning in Poway, California.

An eight-time National League Batting Champion during his 20 year career, he was a master student of the art of hitting... but had an unfortunate personal habit.

"Gwynn had undergone surgery for cancer of the mouth and salivary glands in recent years.... He attributed the cancer to having dipped tobacco throughout his career."

I just never got the "pleasure" or "satisfaction" in that.

Tony Gwynn

His brother Chris played for the Dodgers, his son, Tony Jr. now with the Phillies, played with the Dodgers, but Tony was a San Diego Padre from debut 'til retirement.
