Moron of the Month, April 2014

Sandra Hines

Meet Michigan activist Sandra Hines of the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality who actually criticized that city's Police Chief for promoting "vigilantism" because he supports home-owners right to armed self-defense.

Chief James Craig

What Police Chief James Craig said earlier this year was that in the hands of legal, law-abiding citizens, firearms "could be a deterrence to violent crime."

When Chief Craig appeared on WJR's The Paul W. Smith Show, the host asked him whether he knew of any instances in Detroit of the "Knockout Game" in which unsuspecting victims are randomly sucker-punched by strangers.

"I think folks, the people who would engage in that foolishness, probably know that there's a number of (Concealed Pistol License) holders running round the streets of in Detroit. Probably not a real good idea."

In January, Ms. Hines was quoted as saying:

"It could lead to vigilantism. I just think that we already have the open-gun-carry law here and we have the stand-your-ground law, we don't need to have ... anybody encouraging citizens, and then, what is the definition of a law-abiding citizen, what does a law-abiding citizen look like...."

Okay, so maybe some reporter stuck a microphone in her face and caught her opening her mouth before her brain was fully engaged, but then three months later, she was still at it, calling Chief Craig "irresponsible" and insisting that his view encourages vigilantism.

Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality Director Ron Scott

The Director of her organization, former Black Panther Party member Ron Scott, amplified Hines' sentiments:

"I think it's inappropriate for a law enforcement official who's supposed to be promoting peace to suggest what people already know about their right to defend themselves. When you take a Wild West approach and say, 'Shoot them,' it's irresponsible. It's frontier justice at its worst."

(Okay, so Scott is no Mensa member either!)

Chief Craig defended his words:

"I'm not encouraging vigilantism; vigilantes are cowards who take the law into their own hands. I'm only talking about situations where someone's life is in imminent danger. When a citizen is faced with a life-threatening situation, they absolutely have the right to defend themselves."

Noting that there have been 12 justifiable homicides so far this year, Craig added:

"There aren't a bunch of people pulling out their guns and opening fire just because the police chief said citizens have the right to protect themselves. That's ludicrous."

A big atta boy to Chief James Craig, and the "Moron of the Month" title to Sandra Hines.
