Shocker from 'The Bays'

It is with considerable dysphoria that Mrs. Speir and I learned from this morning's Southampton Press Western Edition that one of our two very most favorite Italian restaurants has shut its door and switched off the lights.

Recast as "Rino's Trattoria and Pizzeria" when the business changed hands in early 2012, we knew it simply as "John's," and patronized it before or after attending a movie at the multiplex next door, eschewing the commonplace strip mall pizza counter to take a table in the modest-sized dining room in the rear.

(Jeanne's favorite entree was was the Eggplant Rollatini while I opted for their interpretation of a Baked Lasagna.)

As "John's," the establishment was without affectation, and served good food at moderate prices by a superb wait staff which always remembered our preferences.

The Press report offered no reasons for the closure, but the change in name provides a clue: Hampton Bays isn't big on pretensions or pricy entrees... and when patrons got a look at the prices on the new menu, I'd wager that had a lot to do with the current situation.

Location did not warrant a pricy menu. John's was one of my favorites and I always had the Eggplant Rollatini with a salad.

I concur... an old friend (no names, please) and long-time resident of 11946, several decades ago observed that "people in Hampton Bays don't go for a cent." John's was what it was, and that was more than good enough for us.
