Excellent Question!

In its irregular awarding of "Dunce Caps and Gold Stars," the Editorial Board of The Southampton Press popped one of its best ever questions with its lead demerit this morning.

Referencing the Westhampton Beach Trustees' spending $5,000 to hire the former Bellport Village Clerk to oversee the regular audit of the Village by CPAs Satty, Levine & Ciacco, the newspaper placed a Dunce Cap on the collective noggins of Trustees Hank Tucker, Patricia DiBennedetto, Junior Palmer and Ralph Urban.

Most importantly, our newspaper of record notes:

"While Mr. Tucker insists that he is not conducting a 'witch hunt,' that seems to be the case. Just ask [Village Clerk Rebecca] Molinaro. She's the one who made the mistake of ticking off former village trustee Joan Levan by staying in the office to validate the election petition of former Deputy Mayor Toni-Jo Birk in June."

...then asks:

"Could this be payback, thanks to Mr. Tucker and the board?"

An acute observation... and damn'd right it could.

It's not nice to embarrass the Empress of Oneck when through her ignorance she makes a fool of herself, which is exactly what she did last May when she went through all sorts of gyrations to have Mrs. Birk's nominating petition declared invalid.

Good job by Western Edition Editor Costanza... Frank, I never realized you were paying that much attention.

I'm still waiting for people to question the accounting of Westhampton Library contracts and expenditures. Both Tucker and Levan are involved in that; a conflict of interest and way too much financial power concentrated into the hands of two.

$5,000 is "mere pennies," people.

And nothing to quibble about, eh?
