Why is it especially fitting...

Updated 10/22/2012 – 09:47 pm

...that this evening's pre-season game between the New York Knickerbockers and the Philadelphia 76ers, will be played in Syracuse, New York?

(Hint: it will be played in the Carrier Dome rather than the Onondaga County War Memorial... or State Fair Coliseum or Syracuse Armory Building.)

Give up?

In the early years of the National Basketball Association, between 1946 and 1963, the upstate city was home to the Syracuse Nationals, which franchise relocated to Philadelphia in 1964 and rebranded themselves at the 76ers.

This evening's game is therefore a meeting of two of the league's original teams in one of the leagues original cities.

I tend to notice things like that.

Post game...

Only 8,831 people were in attendence to welcome Syracuse University's Carmelo Anthony in his return to the 49,262-seat Carrier Dome as the 78ers beat the Knicks, 98-90... and they didn't need Dolph Shayes to do it.
