Drama Down Under

Updated 08/04/2011– 02:12 pm

...and it's playing out in "real-time:"

Police try for 8 hours to defuse bomb reportedly tied to girl's neck

That's a pretty grim and potentially grisly situation on the other side of the world: Sydney, Australia.

"Madeleine Pulver, 18, told police a stranger wearing a ski mask put the device around her neck after breaking into the family's home around 2:30 p.m."
News photo from Sydney, Australia

The "collar bomb" feature of the crime recalls the notorious event in Erie, Pennsylvania 11 years ago this month when 48-year-old pizza delivery man1 Brian Wells wore such a device during a bank robbery, asserting that three black men2 fitted it around his neck to force him to do their nefarious bidding.

(Although it was later discovered that he was a willing participant in the crime, he did not survive the day's event.)

Update #1

Ten hours in the making, and no bomb-sniffing dogs were harmed!

Sydney Bomb Squad Secures Safe Release of Teenager

The "who" and the "why" of this will not only make for a fascinating follow-up, but almost certainly a Lifetime movie-of-the-week... if NBC doesn't beat them to it!

Update #2
Madeleine Pulver

Ms. Pulver, harrowed but unharmed, has been reunited with her parents and siblings in the family's upscale Sydney suburb of Mosman as police attempt to sort out what they feel points to an elaborate extortion attempt.

After rendering the device safe and freeing the teenager, authorities learned that it revealed no trace of explosives, and was harmless.

Update #3

Talk about your "speed of the Internet," less than 24 hours following the release of the young woman from the suspect device, there's already a Website, madeleinepulver.com, bearing her name!

  1. That's gotta tell you something right there! 48 and delivering pizzas! This was before the economy went into the toilet!
  2. As with the Charles Stuart case, it's always the black guys who get the blame.
