Old story... still tragic

This morning's 27East headline took me back more than half-a-century:

One Teen Dead, Another Charged With DWI Following Car Accident In East Quogue On Sunday

It seemed to happen with greater frequency then, but the elements of the tragedy haven't changed:

A post-graduation celebration + alcohol + the operation of a motor vehicle.

Now two families are in utter disarray, one mourning the loss of a son, the other dealing with the enormity of their son's abysmal decision-making, each on a day intended for joy and congratulations.

For the schoolmates of Cameron Nicholls and Taylor Geib a terrible first step into the real world, and a shocking sense of their own mortality.

And, if memory serves, the most compelling reason for holding graduation ceremonies Sunday afternoon instead of a Friday evening, was to reduce the possibility of this type of event.

EVERY PARENTS' NIGHTMARE - and it doesn't have to happen!!!!

Dean, have you heard who supplied the alcohol to these kids?

IMO, they are at least as culpable as the poor kid who was driving, and I hope they are prosecuted for their actions.

  1. No.
  2. Absolutely!
  3. I second that suggestion.
