Straying from the campaign trail...

Updated 06/12/2011 – 11:28 pm

...for just a moment to make an observation of national, if not global interest.

There will be a unique dynamic in play tonight when the Dallas Mavericks tip off against the Miami Heat in Game 6 of the National Basketball Association Finals.

In an entirely unscientific poll, my buddy Marty and I estimate that in excess of 90% of the world where hoops are played, will be rooting against perhaps the best basketball player in the universe: LeBron James.

And for anyone who can't relate to why, no, "King" James wasn't caught "sexting" with a 15-year-old cheerleader or profiting from the Bernie Madoff ponzi scheme.

James victimized himself through his own youthful hubris last July with his televised "decision" about whose money he was going to take and where he was going to play.

(Remember the "I'll be taking my talents to South Beach" moment?)

That was the moment when it all changed and LeBron "lost" most of the fans, and while few can name anyone on the Mavericks' roster outside of a big gawky-looking guy named Dirk Nowitzki and 17-year veteran Jason Kidd, right now this is one Dallas sports franchise that truly is "America's Team."

(That was one appellation I not only couldn't buy into 30 years ago, but was offended that the NFL's Dallas Cowboy's were branding themselves as such.)

The karma will be thick tonight, and I like Dallas' chances of riding it to the NBA title!

Yea, Dallas! You not only did it, you did it on Miami's home court!

As for the other guy, the "King" is dead... long live the King's career on the court.

Off the court? Ol' son, you've got some rehabilitation to do!
