Curse you, Clay Felker!

Updated 06/03/2011 – 11:41 pm

Don't much care for kicking a corpse, but a conceit the man started decades ago seems to have taken hold in an unlikely place.

Now the League of Women Voters of the Hamptons has bought into Felker's social gerrymandering of the late '60s which defined "The Hamptons" as starting East of the Shinnecock Canal.

The founding New York Magazine publisher arbitrarily decided to exclude Westhampton Beach, Quogue and Hampton Bays from that prestigious appellation, and that was okay with most of us as regards the sort of "Page Six" journalism that Felker's editors encouraged.

And now 43 years later, LOWVH has followed suit despite advising on it's website:

"Serving the people of East Hampton and Southampton, New York"

However, when The Southampton Press Western Edition approached LOWVH about jointly hosting, as they did last June, a Westhampton Beach Village Board candidates debate, they declined with a dismissive "we don't do West of the Canal" attitude.

(East of the Canal? No problem... LOWVH hosted one last night in East Hampton.)

A big Boooooo! Hiss! to the League of Women Voters of the Hamptons.

And an even bigger raspberry as well to Hank Tucker for using LOWVH's disinclination to provide the framework, as a refusal to engage in public debate.

A 'phone call to the League of Women Voters of the Hamptons requesting an explanation for their change of policy remains unreturned.

Hank and Pat can run, but they cannot hide.

They cannot use LOWVH as a cover to skip out on a debate. They could have participated in a debate sponsored by The Southampton Press.

They have been exposed. They have proven that they do not have any consideration for the Voters of Westhampton Beach.

If the voters of Westhampton Beach are accepting of Tucker and DiBenedetto's behavior, then they deserve them.

My wife had intended to vote for Dean and Pat D. She is now only going to cast one vote... for Dean. Smart lady I married.

So what do we get instead? Brookhaven LWV? Now there's a scary thought....

Last I checked, Westhampton Beach has a "Hampton" in the name... does this have anything to do with Tucker's puppetmistress, Joan Levan joining the LWV?

If so, boo-hiss you hypocrits!

You're right! I'd forgotten that!

That makes a lot of sense.

Ding dong, the Wicked Witch strikes again!

Yeah, the more I think about it, there's probably a connection.

Sounds to me like a complaint should be lodged with National Headquarters.

It will be called to their attention.

Remember seeing a League booth at the Farmers' Market last year. Checked their web site; there are some prominent Westhampton area names listed as newly elected directors. Lynch, Remler and Dell. Bet they'd have something to say!

[sigh] LOWVH Westhampton "Chapter" = "Friends of Joan Levan." I had forgotten that she'd joined a year or so ago 'til my wife and others reminded me yesterday.

Sounds like a stacked deck!

Don't know about the "stacked deck" part, but it raises questions about how impartial (always an LOWV hallmark) LOWVH actually are.

O dear, I see in the blog that Levan joined the League of Women Voters. Now that's big news. She enlarges her circle of influence to achieve her ends.

You were right, you are always right, with your Shakespeare quotes. You said of her that "we have scotch'd the snake, not killed it." Alas.

Though he lived half-a-Millennium ago, the Bard wrote something applicable to almost any occasion!

The Empress of Oneck actually joined LOWVH over a year ago. See: "So now there's going to be... [a candidates' debate]."

That was then... they can't take that chance this time out. Hank would have to defend his record, which he cannot do, and Pat Dibenedetto would have to explain her support for Ralph Neubauer continuing as Chairman of the Planning Board.

I believe it should have read East Hampton and Southampton Towns, maybe it was an error. I have attended events of LOWV in both Westhampton Beach and Quogue.

Apparently not this year.
