Memorial Day 2011

While the weather was "iffy" the sense of purpose was anything but when several hundred people gathered at the Westhampton Cemetery for the annual services of remembrance!

The 50-minute ceremony featured speakers...shortened a tad due to the threatening weather and the incapacitation of one of the scheduled speakers... offering remarks about service to country and personal sacrifice.

Included on the program were "Ham" Andon, Al Tudisco, Rita Wyatt, Pete Cuthbert, Bill Dalton, Michael Pope, Michael Jacobs, 106th ANG Wing Commander Tom Owens III and Bill Matthews, with opening Invocation and closing Benediction courtesy of Father Patrick of Saint Marks Church.

At the end of the affecting ceremony, everyone either went home or repaired to American Legion Post 834 for refreshments.

The honored dead remained... remembered for another year.

Not too many flags flying in my 'hood from porches. The most prominent one was from the home of a Columbian couple who are naturalized citizens who occsionally complain to me about the illegals who live the neighborhood. The wife reminds me she knows who the 5th president of the U.S. was because it was on the test.

Gotta love that!

(Monroe, right... last of the Founding Fathers of our Country?)

Yes, you got it, and as she says "I know all about the Monroe Doctrine, Kennedy used it in the Cuban missile crisis!"

Or, say "Goodnight," Gracie.smiley
