Kabot to Village: 'Game on!'

Updated 05/04/2011 – 07:32 pm

Let it not be said that former Southampton Town Supervisor Linda Kabot isn't feisty.

Three months after her acquittal following a jury trial on "alcohol-related" (DWI) charges stemming from her Labor Day 2009 arrest on Main Street, Mrs. Kabot has served notice that she is coming after the Village of Westhampton Beach and members of its Police Department, from Chief Ray Dean, his Executive Officer Trevor Gonce and officers, Ryan Lucas and Steven McManus who made the vehicle stop and arrest.

Also named in Mrs. Kabot's action are Junior Officer Mark Yakobowski and Seasonal Officer Jeffrey Platt, though their roles in the arrest are not immediately clear.

It should be noted that Platt was referenced in the linked article as the...

"...part-time Village Police Officer who couldn't resist informing his Southampton Town Police Officer brother of [the Supervisor's] arrest which set in motion the events which allowed defense attorney William Keahon to conjure up an obfuscatory cloud of conspiracy charges...."

If this is why Officer Platt is named as a respondent, it provides a clearer picture of at least one of Mrs. Kabot's objectives.

Anyone who didn't see this coming...

...wasn't paying attention to the March 2010 Village Board Meeting when the obstructionist troika of Kametler, Levan and Tucker insisted on passing four illegal Resolutions despite the strongest possible advice of then Village Attorney Hermon Bishop that even a reading of the resolutions would expose the municipality to liability. (Video of full meeting.)

(An exasperated and insulted Bishop resigned his position the following week.)

As OtBB noted the next day, the one resolution referencing "Citizen K" served only to provide "aid and comfort" to Mrs. Kabot.

And as predictable as a U-Turn on Main Street, right after Village Clerk Kathleen McGinnis certified the minutes of that meeting, husband Lance Kabot came in to obtain copies of same.

Those minutes will doubtless be Exhibit #1 should this action proceed to trial.

Absent from the list of named respondents are those most responsible for the action: Trustees Jim Kametler, Joan Levan, Hank Tucker, and then ZBA member Tom Moore who authored the resolutions on their behalf.

Exit Keahon, Enter Ray

William Keahon, who represented Mrs. Kabot at her DWI trial earlier this year, is no longer acting on her behalf.

Instead her counsel in this action is John Ray & Associates of Miller Place, the founder and principal of which advises that he...

"...is the only attorney in the U.S. to have two full-length trials covered by Court TV and has frequently appeared on nationwide television, including Hardcopy, Current Affair, Inside Edition, Larry King Live, Sally Jesse Raphael, Geraldo Rivera, Maury Povich, Jenny Jones, Larry King Live...."
John Ray

In other words, the dapper Mr. Ray is in make-up readying for his TV appearances.

Ain't we got fun!

In the style of Joe Mantell to Jack Nicholson in one of the best films noir ever;

"Forget it Linda, it's Westhampton Beach."

Okay, that did it! I just ordered a DVD of "Chinatown" for my library!

I just saw the video of Ms. Kabot's arrest and I think she has a good case. For the record, I never heard of this case until I read about it here. I don't know anybody involved. I like and respect cops in general. I do lean a little Republican. Having said that, she did not appear intoxicated to me.

But Jimbo, c'mon! Given your frame of reference here in the '70s and '80s, no one ever appeared intoxicated to you.

As I remember it, Dean, everyone looked intoxicated.

Objection, your honor... Heresay!

As George Carlin used to say, "If you remember the '60s, you weren't there!"

For me it was '74-'82... as the late Monsignor Charlie Newell instructed me to say: "To the best of my recollection, I have no knowledge...."
