Who're ya gonna believe…

...the National Weather Service or your own lyin' eyes? Or in this instance, those of my on-the-scene wife!

At "11:23 am EDT, Sun., Aug. 29, 2010" The Weather Channel posted the following:

"THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN UPTON HAS CANCELLED{sic} THE HIGH SURF ADVISORY."

(They likely type with their caps-lock engaged to get everyone's attention.)

Less than ten (10!) minutes later, Jeanne called from Rogers Beach to report that the surf was up to the Dune and lapping at the end of the Empress' synthetic walk-way.

And, she added in high dudgeon:

"There's NO SWIMMING, damnit!"

If it's not nice "to fool Mother nature," it's equally dangerous to interfere with Mrs. Speir's ocean swims.

We... me 'n' the dogs... can but hope that her bicycle ride home dissipates her ill humor.

Any word on Hurricane Earl?

What am I, the National Weather Service? Here, put this on your desktop!

What was creepy was that the beach was literally GONE. I mean, there was a little lagoon for the toddlers to get wet in at the very foot of the dunes. But there's an upside: this would have been the only day that the $17,000 fugly plastic beach mat would allow a wheelchair to the water. (Can't they cover that thing with a little sand so it blends in with the dunes?)

The lifeguards at the Quogue Village Beach allowed swimming for a while this afternoon after about 2:00 pm. Still too rough for this mid-West girl.

The surf's loss was my gain, and I found Mrs. Speir to be in a most fine humor when I paid my visit.
