The Busses Stop Here...

Updated 06/30/2016 – 8:49 am

...and here as well; but not to worry, it'll only be for a 30-day "trial basis."

Never underestimate the power of...

Anna Throne-Holst

...a well-turned ankle (leg photo not available) and a winsome smile:

Throne-Holst, Calone race too close to call on primary night

Following Tuesday's Democratic Primary in the First (NY) Congressional District, the one-time Anna Gerschman held a 29 vote lead over former Suffolk County Planning Commission Chairman David Calone out of 10,863 machine ballots cast across 683 precincts.

Seen 'round our Village...

...early this week, was a good-sized construction truck marked "Five Towns Eruv" working in the area.

The conclusion drawn is inescapable... despite the depiction of an "eruv map" on Hampton Synagogue's Website, and the pronouncement by Rabbi Marc Schneier last August that the controversial Jewish religious boundary was up and operational... that may not have been "accurate."

No big surprise... for anyone clocking the progression of the eruv from its start in 2008, it's all been one big flim-flam on the part of the proponents.

The Mayor's 'wingman'

From the June 21st Progress4WHB entry:

"Maria brings a Je Ne Sais Quoi that is undeniable...."

Impossible not to think of this:

...and since Tom Moore's fond of quotations, here's an Oscar Wilde: "I can resist anything except temptation."

Tom, I think you walked into that one....

Ask not why Truman dropped the A-Bomb

CBS News had an intriguing story last evening about an old wrong righted, the true identity of one of the six servicemen pictured in auguably the most famous photograph in American history, Joe Rosenthal's capture of the raising of the American flag over Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima, February 23, 1945.

The Altice deal is done!

OtBB alerted to this disturbing possibility in March ("What does the Cablevision sale portend?") and now my television/Internet/telephone/WiFi provider informs us...

Optimum is now owned by Altice.

Of course there is an attendant FAQ, one item of which is disheartening infuriating: More...

Where O where did this come from?

Jump page (A15) headline in today's Southampton Press Western Edition:

ELECTION: Urban, Frano Win Open Seats In Westhampton Beach

Nothing "open" about either of those Trustee seats!

In fact, I don't think there was an "open seat" anywhere in Southampton Town last week!

Who Knew?

Or to take it a step farther, who had ever heard of the "Bureau of Ocean Energy Management?"

I certainly hadn't until recent full-time Village resident, eagle-eyed Jacqueline Sprotte wrote OtBB early this morning informing that BOEM, apparently a sub-set of the United States Department of the Interior, is holding a meeting this evening (6:00-8:00pm) at Westhampton Beach Elementary School. Once I got over the shock...

...of Bobby Kennedy's assassination in 1968... it was the most forlorn time of my life... I had much to ponder in respect to "gun control," a topic that was suddenly on everyone's radar with the shooting deaths of the Kennedy brothers and Martin Luther King Jr.

(The two largest "mass murders" at the time were the 1966 Texas Tower shootings where Charles Whitman wounded 43, 13 fatally, and that same year the grisly murders of eight student nurses in Chicago... but then, Richard Speck stabbed and strangled his victims.)

Congress' response was to quickly pass the More...

Callooh! Callay!

"O frabjous evening," he chortles in his joy.

June 19th will soon be over, and this has been the best Father's day in my memory... in short order:

  • Jeanne surprised me with an extra-special Sunday brunch of fried egg on a biscuit with sausage gravy!
  • A raft of Father's Day cards from Jeanne and both doggies, plus 3,000+ mile messages from both my progency and my step-son.
  • The Dodgers... my Dodgers, came back in the 8th and 9th innings to beat the Milwaukee Brewers. (Hereafter be spoilers) More...

In Westhampton Beach, the ballots...

...have been cast (209 in all), counted and while certification awaits, for now in the contested race, it's two-term Trustee Ralph Urban leading the field with 132 votes to first-timer Steve Franco with 126 and incumbent Deputy Mayor Charlie Palmer Jr. finishing up the track with 98.

There were several sundry write-in votes for Trustee, but close to two dozen for the office of Mayor where Maria Moore in her first re-election bid won with 132 votes.

Others top slot write-ins included former Deputy Mayor Toni Jo Birk, ex-School Board member Clint Greenbaum and former Mayor Conrad Teller. More...

June 17, 1994: In retrospect...

...during that interminable two-hour and one-minute police and media helicopter "low speed chase" of the white 1993 Ford Bronco, a whole lot of time and money could have been saved the people of Los Angeles if the police "negotiator" on the 'phone with fugitive double-murder suspect O.J. Simpson, who was telling them he was pointing a gun at his own head, had just said at the start:

"Go ahead, punk! If you think you've got the guts, just do it! Either pull the freakin' trigger, or pull over and surrender to the police!"

The ripple effect, mostly positive, would have More...

Guess who's been asleep for...

...the past two years, those spanning the first term of the Moore administration in Westhampton Beach?

Answer: the Editorial Board of the Southampton Press Western Edition which, I suspect, is staffed entirely by Frank Costanza who I haven't seen at either a Village Board Meeting or a Work Session in probably five years.

That hasn't stopped it from making the worst selection possible in the newspaper's annual "We Mark Our Ballots" exercise in today's edition. More...

This coming Friday is Election Day...

...in Westhampton Beach, not that anyone's really stood up and taken any notice aside from the local newspaper-of-record just this week.

Main Street Is Epicenter Of This Year's Westhampton Beach Village Board Election

"The proposed revitalization of Westhampton Beach's Main Street is the primary topic on the minds of all three candidates"

It should be stressed that the selection of "Main Street" is solely in the judgement of The Southampton Press Western Edition... not that it's wrong only that it's a fiction of the newpaper's contrivance in much the same way then-Trustee Joan Levan cynically created the Shame on Waldbaum's site for her 2009 re-election bid. "Eckart's Luncheonette"

...when the bidding at the Westhampton Beach Historical Society's Art Auction... Victor E. Levy, Auctioneer... was completed yesterday afternoon on the patio of Starr Boggs' fine dining establishment, favored local artist Liz Duerschmidt's contribution, a black and white acrylic-on-canvas rendering of centennial Mill Road establishment Eckart's Luncheonette, had drawn the highest bid, $400.

The next highest objet d'art was for a stylized "mathematical" painting of a fish by Suzy Rogers Williams.

Poor choices...

Ralph Neubauer arrested for DWI

...on several counts made by a Westhampton Beach Planning Board member (and former Chairman) two nights ago, according to the DWI Arrests section of tomorrow morning's Southampton Press Western Edition.

"Ralph Neubauer, 63, of Westhampton Beach was arrested by Westhampton Beach Village Police at 7:21 p.m. Monday on Potunk Lane and charged with DWI, a misdemeanor. Authorities said he hit another vehicle with his 2002 BMW."

Neubauer's initial bad decision was to get behind the wheel, of course, but the really bad one was having his accident across the street from the Village Police Station.

Why Vin Scully is the best!

Los Angeles Dodgers Broadcaster

I've been listening to the man call Dodgers baseball games since he was a rookie announcer alongside the fabled Red Barber in 1950, and 67 seasons later he still finds ways to delight me with his seamless, assured delivery.

Last night he did it again in the top of the 5th inning when Los Angeles' reliever Adam Liberatore struck out Carlos Gonzalez on a checked swing with the bases loaded.

As the replay showed the action with Scully's call:

"There's the check, and it is a bum check... it won't work anywhere."

T'was but a small thing, but it's why Scully's the best, perhaps the best ever!

Fresh from this morning's story on 27East:

Hampton Jitney Stop Locations Irks Some Westhampton Beach Residents

"The Westhampton Beach Village Board has approved a pair of temporary stops for the Hampton Jitney in the village—though they are not where most people expected them to be."

There's a good reason why 209 Mill Road is "not where most people expected them to be." The Village Board pulled a fast one on everyone with Resolution 17 last Thursday! More...

June Village Board Meeting

The inept manner by which this evening's session was conducted, it's incomprehensible that there's a contested Village Election in Westhampton Beach two weeks from tomorrow, and that three of the Board members currently sitting are on the ballot.

Mayor Maria Moore

I put much of the problem squarely in the lap of Mayor Maria Moore who, instead of improving after 24 months in office, is actually back-sliding in her ability to conduct a public meeting... the ineptitude reveals a larger issue: the incomplete drafting of some of the Resolutions being voted on and passed.
