The DOD 'gets' it...

...even if U.S. Army Chief of Staff General Mark Milley doesn't.

Defense Department releases plan allowing troops to carry privately-owned firearms on base

"The Defense Department has released guidelines that effectively allows troops to carry privately-owned and concealed firearms on military bases like Fort Hood, the scene of mass shootings in 2009 and 2014."

This logical and rational change in military policy comes despite public objections by General Milley, ironically the Base Commander of Fort Hood, Texas at the tine of the 2014 shootings by Spec. Ivan Lopez-Lopez who murdered three unarmed soldiers and wounding 14 others before taking his own life. More...

Love that Kellyanne Conway!

One of the Sunday morning news shows I usually watch is "The Week with George Stephanopoulos" even though it is mostly hosted by that aging shrew Martha Raddatz who this year edged "Judge" Jeanine Pirro out of my top three most detested American women.

(For the record, the other two are Nancy Grace and Hillary Clinton.)

In an attempted "gotcha" interview with Kellyanne More...

A very classy life ends

One of the best sports "trivia" questions that regularly was raised at the Five O'Clock Club in the halcyon days of The Patio in the latter '60s was:

"Name four major league pitchers who had won 20 games by their 21st birthday?"

Two were easy, Christy Mathewson and Bob Feller, and one was tricky 'cause no one remembered that Babe Ruth was a helluva pitcher before he became the all-time home run hitter. More...

"Didja hear about...

...Simon Jorna selling Beach Bakery Cafe and going back to the Netherlands?"
"Yeah, he swore he was going to leave if Donald Trump won the election!"
"Well, Lena Dunham, Cher, Lady GaGa and a whole slew of other celebrities said they were moving to Canada if Hillary lost, but they've all backed out."
"No, Simon's serious... an offer's been made and I hear he's already accepted it." More...

Last night's Oakland Raiders-Houston Texans game was unusual in two respects: it was played way South of the border in Mexico City, and neither teams' place-kickers missed an extra point following a Sunday schedule during which an even dozen, once considered "automatic," points after touchdown were missed.

Kickers miss record 12 extra-point attempts Sunday

"On 12 different occasions Sunday, a kicker lined up for an extra-point attempt following a touchdown and walked away empty-handed." More...

Seen on upper Griffing Avenue

Cheeky little gobblers considering what this Thursday is!

Wild Turkeys on Griffing near Brook Road

Of all the species of fauna I've counted within the Village all these decades, this rafter is a first.

It's not that 'The honeymoon' is over...

...no honeymoon even got started with the President-elect or Vice Pesident-elect as the mainstream media, still smarting over being made to look foolish by the decisive Trump-Pence victory of a dozen days ago, ripped into every decision the incoming Executive has announced.

No one on the Sunday News shows had her claws out more than ABC's Martha Raddatz during her interrogation of Republication National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, named this past week as White House Chief of Staff. More...

A position I never much thought about...

...was that of White House Press Secretary, probably because I generally haven't trusted whoever has served as that capacity.

(You can thank the likes of Ron Ziegler, Jody Powell and Mike McCurry for that!)

That said, while the name of Laura Ingraham has been bandied about to serve in that capacity... and I love Ms. Ingraham for her intelligence and her wit... the Trump-Pence Administration could do a lot worse than hold over Josh Earnest. More...

Whooooooooo did it?

For the second time this Fall, just now there were several loud booms... and I don't think they were sonic in nature.

Jeanne heard it in the kitchen, but for me reading in the living room they were not only audible, but palpable.

So, I ask again, not only "Whooooooooo did it?" but "What was that?"

I'd be ashamed to be a Democrat...

...after watching Mayor Rahm Emanuel pledge that Chicago will "always be a sanctuary city:"

"To all those who are, after Tuesday's election, very nervous and filled with anxiety as we've spoken to, you are safe in Chicago, you are secure in Chicago and you are supported in Chicago. Chicago will always be a sanctuary city." More...

It just makes me crazed!

...and dramatically decreases the pleasure I derive from watching professional football games, a regular pastime since my formative days at the dawn of the '50s.

Seemingly forgotten today is the admonition to his players by the great Green Bay Packers Coach Vince Lombardi: "When you go into the end zone, act like you've been there before." More...

Look to thine own self, lady!

Saturday evening news Flash:

Hillary Clinton Blames F.B.I. Director for Election Loss

"Hillary Clinton on Saturday cast blame for her surprise election loss on the announcement by the F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, days before the election that he had revived the inquiry into her use of a private email server."

And here I've been all along convinced that President-Elect Donald J. Trump was possessed of the biggest ego in the just concluded National election! More...

Notes from Tuesday's front lines...

...dragging my sorry butt much of the day, all in service to a National election that most people were sick of eight months ago.

(The "butt" thing is solely one of my own making... I forgot to bring a seat cushion. Fellow poll worker Tom Betjemann, a member of the Fire Deparment, simply comandeered a cushy desk chair and sat in bliss the entire 16½ hours.)

After several consecutive yawners, this time between the opening of the polls at 6:00 and 6:20 am we processed more than twice as many voters at the last two Primary elections combined. More...

All anyone needs to consider this morning-after-the-day-before was from Senior Politics Editor Sam Stein's post-mortem on the world's biggest cyber-cesspool:

"There are no adjectives to describe what happened on Tuesday night, at least none that seem appropriate for an election result as unfathomable as what transpired."

Donald Trump's win/Hillary Clinton's loss are, either one, "unfathomable" only to the Trump haters and the drinkers of the Clinton kool aid, but certainly understandable, if not actually forseen by thems what had actually been paying attention. More...

No tears here for Janet Reno (1938-2016)

There will be many effusive encomiums tossed at former United States Attorney General Janet Reno, who died early yesterday in Miami, Florida from complications related to Parkinson's disease.

Not a pleasant way to go, either for those afflicted or for family or care-givers around them... but not as horrible as dying by fire or from smoke inhalation as did 80 members of the Branch Davidian religious sect near Waco, Texas, the deadly federal raid Ms. Reno approved in early 1993.

I cannot find it in me to mourn her passing.

It's only fitting, and a bit ironic...

...that more than five dozen Westhampton Beach homes are scheduled to receive potable water from the new Suffolk municipal water system located on county property at Gabreski Airport, designated in September a State Superfund Site.

Fitting because those homes' well water has been contaminated by perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) originating at the Air National Guard facility located on Gabreski. More...

Boy, looks are deceiving!

Chris Bosh

For the past several years, there've been two faces frequently seen on television that have induced an involuntary, faint but discernable, shudder in this viewer.

One is professional basketball player Chris Bosh, one of the "Big Three" who took the Miami Heat to the NBA finals four straight years, winning titles in 2011 and 2012. More...

World Serious Impressions

The past two nights I witnessed the worst post-season centerfield play since game two of the 1966 Fall Classic when the Dodgers Willie Davis made three errors on two successive plays and the Orioles scored three unearned runs on their way to a 6-0 victory and a four game sweep.

(It was the great Sandy Koufax's final game in the majors, retiring that off-season at age 30 with a 75-year old arthritic left arm.

On Tuesday night in the top of the first of a 1-0 game, Indians young centerfielder Tyler Naquin suffered More...

The Faces of the DNC

My wife is seriously pissed!

After scurrying around Western Suffolk last Spring to get the Primary vote out for Bernie Sanders and traveling to Philadelphia to sleep on her daughter's couch to support her candidate at the Democratic National Convention in July...

(She even popped up to New Paltz in September to watch Bernie stump for Zephyr Teachout!)

...it's now sunk in that her guy never had a chance!

First it was revealed that the DNC's medusa... More...
