The countdown's begun on Sunset Avenue...

...as the end times for Westhampton Beach's beleaguered Waldbaum's store approaches.

(An acting store manager, speaking on background, earlier pinpointed the date as Monday, November 23rd.)

The inventory "fire sale" began, as reported here Wednesday, at 9:00 am Friday, with large signs in the windows, and this morning, a lone employee carrying an "up to 40% discounts" sign on the corner of Sunset and Mill Road. More...

...or, "ding dong," the Dowager Empress of Oneck has stepped down from the Board of Trustees of the Westhampton Free Library at their meeting this morning.

Beside Joan Levan, also resigning from the Board were Treasurer June Sellin and newest member Marth-Ann Betjemann before a near capacity room of attendees suddenly interested in how things are being done on Library Avenue.

Those gathered on the sidewalk awaiting entrance to the building were handed a cartoon depicting a throng of reform-minded activists storming a door against which Ms. Levan and four other women of a certain age are braced. More...

Of more than casual import...

...is the Friday morning meeting of the Trustees of Westhampton Free Library, and the 9:30 am time of the meeting is but one of the issues a group of activists led by Peter Zegler and fired employee Sabina Trager, as well as, independently, former Village Attorney Hermon Bishop wish to raise.

(See "Bo Knows...")

Getting the Trustees to revise the library's charter to allow for an elected Board will be the biggest issue, for it's unlikely Board president Joan Levan will ever willingly accede to that request. More...

Tonight's 'Great' CNBC Debate

Far and away the weakest performers in this evening's "Your Money Your Vote" debate were the three moderators... Becky Quick, John Harwood and Carl Quintanilla... they weren't just not up to the challenge, they were unabashedly biased beyond all reason!

(Especially egregious and offensive was New York Times columnist Harwood!)

Participating were top Republican candidates Donald Trump, Ben Carson, Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee, Rand Paul, Carly Fiorina, Chris Christie and John Kasich. More...

Best Market award confirmed

Updated Wednesday, 10/28/2015 – 03:15 pm

In the end, the emotional pleas by the unionized employees of the moribund Westhampton Beach Waldbaum's store fell on deaf ears in United States Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York as Judge Robert Drain formally approved the acquisition of the business by Best Market of Bethpage.

As a result of the final decision rendered yesterday in White Plains, members of United Food & Commercial Workers Local 342 won't come away completely empty-handed as Best agreed to retain 25% of the employees at the Sunset Avenue store as a concession to the union. More...

Dublin Coddle -
Irish Sausage, Bacon, Onion and Potato Hotpot

One of the all-time great green-eyed, red-headed actresses of the technicolor screen passed away yesterday, age 95, in her sleep at her Boise, Idaho home.

Suck it up and pick one, Goodman... you can't have both!

The bambiist pacifying "humane" method is sterilization, and when a representative of the Department of Environmental Conservation appeared before the Village Board several years back and was braced with this question, he categorically deemed it as "expensive and ineffective."

The only "effective" deer management program is culling... and that is completely unacceptable to the bambiists!

So don't try straddling the line on the one, Amos... make your choice and stop wasting time with appeasement.

Senator Bernie Sanders

Yeah, there was that self-described "Democratic Socialist" thing, but that wasn't it, it was his voice and his delivery, and I finally figured it out watching the Sunday morning talking heads, specifically "Meet The Press" with Chuck Todd.

October Village Board Meeting

A fairly short monthly meeting of the Westhampton Beach Village Board (less Trustee Ralph Urban) given the number of attendees... not quite a "full house" but close enough for this time of year.

The bulk of the attendees, employees of the local Waldbaum's and their representatives from Local 342, during the Public Comment part of the evening expressed dire concern for the imminent loss of their jobs with the acquisition of the Sunset Avenue store by Best Market. More...

"...apparently does not intend to hire union employees."

Accompanying UFCW Local 342 counsel Martin L. Milner's filing to United States Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York, were approximately 80 letters from union members and Westhampton Beach Waldbaum's shoppers, requesting that the judge allow the store to be sold to a company that will retain the union.

An eternal argument over Capital Punishment

There's the moral question as to whether it's right to take a life for taking a life, and the financial consideration about whether it costs a government more to incarcerate someone for Life or to execute them.

Here's something to ponder stemming from the execution Thursday night of one Alfredo Prieto, a serial rapist and murderer convicted of those charges in both California and Virginia.

(And based on DNA and ballistics evidence, there were at least nine additional homicides with which Prieto could have been charged!) More...

Everyone properly prepared for Joaquin?

Hurricane warning flags

In case you're not, our friend Library Director Danielle Waskiewicz, in keeping her commitment to making sure the Westhampton Free Library is providing good value to its tax-paying community, has a Storm Preparedness page mounted on their Website.

The up-to-the-minute progress of Joaquin can be tracked on the National Weather Service site, or by clicking on the Accuweather "bug" in the menu at the right.
