Ah, it takes me back...

...to 1974, 40 years ago today, actually, when Notre Dame 9-1 at the time and ranked Number 5 among all major colleges in the country, came to the Los Angeles Coliseum to play the sixth-ranked University of Southern California (8-1-1)... they still had tie games in those days.

The Fighting Oirish led 24-0 in the second quarter when, with 10 seconds remaining, USC tailback Anthony Davis took a seven yard lateral from quarterback Pat Haden for a touchdown.

They came up empty on the two-point conversion, and were down 24-6 at the half. More...

Just the best Thanksgiving!

Detroit Lions logo

The Detroit Lions... my Lions... returned to their winning ways with a decisive 34-17 comeback win over the "Monsters of the Midway" on National TV, and that was great!

Then Philadelphia's Eagles took down the detested... by me, at least!... Dallas Cowboys, 33-10, and that pretty much capped the day for me!

And between the final guns, we enjoyed a spectacular Thanksgiving Feast courtesy of our friends Mary (a teriffic cooks!) and John in Quogue!

What a kick-off to the holiday season!

Today is a special one...

...for Jeanne and m'self as it was Thanksgiving Day 2001 when we two re-connected while being of service to the lame, the halt, the aged, the infirm and the alone, a sappy tale of romance over the steam tables of New Moon Café I've related many times in the past.

So I'll not do it again, and just wish everyone the Happiest of Thanksgivings!

Getting a handle on 'Maria-speak'

With the five month anniversary of her being sworn in as Mayor of Westhampton Beach approaching next week, it might be instructive to know what Maria Z. Moore is actually saying when she utters certain phrases... and we'll take this slowly, i.e., one at a time.

From this morning's Southampton Press Western Edition...

Back On The Table
Grocery store pitch isn’t dead

"'I've been approached by a lot of people about it, so I think we should look into it,' Ms. Moore said during last week’s work session." More...

Remember him?

Barry Layne in 2012

His name is Barry Layne, better known as "Big Barry," proprietor of a successful steak house of the same name on Route 25A in Rocky Point, and later a less successful one on Middle Country Road in Centereach.

I'm several seasons late to the party on this one, but m'daughter pointed me to this YouTube clip from "America's Got Talent" and, not surprisingly, it brought back a flood of recollections. More...

Now this is depressing!

a red grapefruit half

My wife, the medical professional, served me half a red grapefruit as part of my Sunday breakfast... it was tasty, and I remarked:

"Haven't had this in quite awhile... we should do this more often. It was a real treat."

"Not with some of the medications you're taking," she shot back. "Google 'drug interactions + grapefruit,'" so I did.

Ack! "Potentially fatal side effects!"

Who knew what ordinary resident of a household refrigerator could generate such grave toxicity in an unsuspecting consumer?

'Duke Days' Indeed!

John Wayne Western title card

One of the Encore brand of cable television channels is "Encore Westerns" which, as most could figure out, is devoted to the Western genre of movies and re-runs of those television shows from the late '50s through the mid-'60s.

("Encore Westerns" is seen on channel 353 on the local cable system.)

This month they've been heavy on John Wayne Westerns, and will culminate with a day-long "Duke Marathon" on Thanksgiving. More...

Will they put the lie to their own promise?

From the July 8, 2014 entry on the Moore/Palmer Agitprop blogspot entitled A New Chief of Police:

"It is only after there has been a complete evaluation of the available candidates that we can make the best determination and ensure that the next Chief will enjoy broad community support and will have the respect of the officers in the department."

The new Administration had their man, not in the wings, but front and center and ready to go with Lieutenant Trevor Gonce. More...

November Trustees Work Session

Updated 11/20/2014 – 11:25 am

There could be multiple explanations for what transpired this evening at the Westhampton Beach Village Board's monthly Work Session, but it's difficult to arrive at a definitive answer that isn't rife with conjecture.

Sparsely attended, it marked the (promising) debut of Village Attorney Stephen Angel of Esseks, Hefter & Angel, LLP of Riverhead... he seemed to get the lay of the land pretty quickly.

Ignoring the part where long-time Village Planner Kyle Collins was summoned to the meeting to discuss More...

I love it!

Headline from over the weekend:

USPS Workers fired for sleeping on job
Investigators raid facility, take photos of snoozers

USPS banner
"Ten Long Island USPS workers at the Hicksville Maintenance Facility were fired Friday for sleeping on the graveyard shift instead of repairing mail trucks...."

I wonder what would have happened had there been a competent agency to pull a similar late night raid on the old Sunset Avenue Police Station anytime during the mid-'70s to the late '90s! More...

Gregor follows up...

...on last Fedruary's OtBB entry entitled "Memo to Alex Gregor" in which the abysmal condition of...

"South Road in Westhampton between Cook's Pond and the Long Island Railroad crossing, with particular focus on that stretch between Seabreeze Avenue and Summit Boulevard"

...was publicly called to his attention.

Well, defying all expectations, I'm pleased to note that the Southampton Town Highway Superintendent has actually done something about that situation, resurfacing South Road from Nadine Drive by Cook's Pond all the way to the Brookhaven Town line... More...

It has been called to my attention...

...that the Village's current administration has continued to maintain, with regular updates, its campaign Website, "Progress For Westhampton Beach."

Or, as it will henceforth be known on OtBB in order to keep it in perspective, the "Moore/Palmer Agitprop."

(It will be listed in the right-hand menu column of this blog since it is, after all, about Westhampton Beach... or at least their vision of our Village.)

And while I may take the mickey out of Mrs. Moore, Junior Palmer and especially shot-caller/Dowager Empress of Oneck Joan Levan, their views deserve exposure.

On another note, it's apparent that this blogspot has had considerable influence on the new kid on the Web, I am flattered... I think.

Why we love Jennifer Lawrence, #32

Jennifer Lawrence

Not only is the Academy Award-winning young actress a dish and abundantly talented, but aside from that gaffe involving keeping nude photos of herself on her (hackable) cell' 'phone, able to make good decisions about her career.

Brilliant in films such as "Winter's Bone," "Silver Linings Playbook" and "American Hustle," and enormously popular as "Katniss Everdeen" and "Raven/Mystique" in, respectively, "The Hunger Games" and prequel "X-Men" franchises, at age 24 she's got it all going for her.

It's why I was disturbed to see that she'd signed on to do a "cameo" in the about-to-be released sequel to 1994's moronic "Dumb & Dumber."

Ennnt! Not so fast! Comes now news that "J.Law," as the equally moronic 7:00 pm "entertainment news shows" refer to her, scrapped that cameo.

Excellent move, young lady!

CVS the new 'Shoreham?'

Headlines on page 1 of this morning's Southampton Press Western Edition:

Here and there... and about our Village

Jeanne went to Riverhead yesterday... and filled up her vehicle's fuel tank at $3.099/gallon.

Compare that to what we're expected to pay at either of the local gas pumps!

And there's one less place to dine in the Village today: Red Fortune seems to had shuttered itself for the Winter.

Based on an aggregate of the crowd-sourced reviews on TripAdvisor, their downtime will be best spent re-thinking their staffing and kitchen.

November Village Board Meeting

Another dull public Meeting of the Westhampton Beach Village Board... 27 minutes and nothing much transpired other than Attorney John Bennett, representing CVS, objected to the requirement of a full Market and Municipal Impact Study of the former bowling alley property under the State Environmental Quality Review Act.

Also, the Board beefed up the census of the Village Police Department by appointing Joseph Loria to the position of Part Time Police Officer at an hourly rate of $20.00 as of October 30, 2014. More...

It is furiously to be desired!

Brief E-mail from a reasonably squared away pal of four decades:

"A friend in the wholesale food supply business tells me he has heard that Fairway Foods has made overtures to Waldbaums about taking over their sites in Westhampton Beach and Southampton Village - hear anything?

Fairway did this in both Queens and Plainview."

Wow! What a boon to the Village should this come More...

Say 'Good-bye,' Tim, you mutt!

Wow, one of my fondest wishes just came true... six-term Democratic Congressman Timothy H. Bishop has finally paid for his mindless tethering to Nancy Pelosi's House of Representatives apron strings.

Congratulations, Lee Zeldin! Stay worthy of the trust placed in you today by a solid majority of the 1st Congressional District.

Now I have to go grovel on New York State GOP Chairman Eddie Cox's lawn in the morning for doubting what he told me privately 17 months ago, that Zeldin would be a winner against Bishop this time around.

George, George, George...

...why are we not surprised?!

Guldi Denied Parole, Will Spend At Least Two More Years Behind Bars

George Guldi

"Finding that Mr. Guldi, now 61, had no remorse for using forged documents to scam millions of dollars from banks, nor any explanation for his actions after interviewing him on October 14, the board denied his bid for parole and put him on a 24-month hold, meaning he will not be eligible for parole again until 2016...." W-a-a-a-y better than sliced bread!

And it's no contest! Sliced bread finishes up the track.
