Too bad I won't drink their beer...

...just as a matter of personal taste, but Anheuser-Busch commissions some terrific television commercials, such as last year's lump-in-the-throat-inducing 73-second spot featuring a Clydesdale reuniting with an old friend.

(G'wan, keep a dry eye with that one, I dare ya!)

Well, this Sunday, weather-permitting the Super Bowl, they've got another one that's a grabber as well:

[gulp!] First a Clydesdale, and now mix in a puppy!

C'mon, now

...after watching "Murder on a Honeymoon" cablecast on TNT Saturday morning, I wanna know why the "Charlie Chan" programmers1 of the early '40s are still embargo'd for audiences of today?

Mantan Moreland, circa 1946

Ostensibly those 15 films made between 1944 and 1949 by Monogram Pictures, were pulled from release in the mid-'70s because of the antiquated black stereotype in the person of Mantan Moreland (1902–1973) who portrayed the Chan family chauffer (in livery, yet!) "Birmingham Brown." More...

Weekend Score Card

Saturday evening's open air ice hockey contest between cross-ravine rivals Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks went off relatively smoothly, with the again mighty Ducks prevailing 3-0, although only 54,099 showed up to watch it.

(Dodgers Stadium seats 56,000 at full baseball capacity, more the way it was configured with a rink.)

Two impressions: More...

Three cent stamp, circa 1943

That was the cost of a First Class stamp when I was a kid.

Now is definitely a time for some nostalgia since, effective today, the United States Postal Service has increased the price of that same First Class postage to 49¢, a flat increase of, coincidentally, three cents (up from 46¢)!

(The previous two USPS rate increases, on January 22, 2012 and January 27, 2013, lasted just a year each.) More...

The TV commercial that irks me...

...most at the moment is Sean Combs' Cîroc Ultra Premium Vodka TV spot with Aaron Paul, Eva Marcille, Dania Ramirez, Michael K. Williams, Chad Michael Murray, Jesse Williams, Lisa Seiffert and Frank Vincent on a music bed of Frank Sinatra singing "Luck Be a Lady."

(If that 30-second spot has somehow eluded your notice, not to worry...) More...

Helluva plan!

I mean, what were they thinking in the League offices of the NHL and the NFL when they decided to have an al fresco hockey game in Southern California this Saturday and the Super Bowl in New Jersey next weekend?

While the NFL once tagged XLVIII as "the first Super Bowl played outdoors in a Northern city," there was a very good reason why the previous 47 were held either under domes or in places like SoCal, Texas or Florida! More...

Your ex wants you back

"We are thrilled to announce that The Hampton Synagogue and the Beach Bakery Grand Cafe have come to an understanding whereby the bakery and cafe will be fully kosher as of May 2, 2014."

The press release, bearing the signatures "Rabbi Marc Scheneier{sic}" and "President Morris Tuchman," seems to signal a repair of the broken relationship between More...

Enough Richard Sherman Already!

What in the ever-lovin' blue-eyed li'l world would the sports pages and electronic media be covering this week if it wasn't for the Seattle Seahawks First Team All-Pro cornerback the past two days?

First ballot Hall of Famer Peyton Manning's return to glory? The simple ordinariness of first ballot Hall of Famer Tom Brady over the past eight seasons?

But no, Richard Sherman has stolen the media spotlight with his defensive prowess in Seattle's 23-17 win over More...

Clear one Murder 2

Both 27East and Newsday are reporting that an arrest has been made in the break-in home invasion homicide of a Guatemalan native in Eastport six weeks ago.

Aside from the name of the suspect, neither report, both working off a Suffolk County Police press release, provide any information about what led them to Paul Batterson, Jr., 22, of East Moriches, or why the decedent, 45-year-old Francisco Pirir, and his immigrant housemates were targeted, or if an arrest of the second suspect is imminent.

Swan Song?

It's a good thing Budd and Gerry Schulberg never lived to see this headline:

State eyes killing or capturing all mute swans

Swan Watch

...they co-authored (Gerry did the color and black & white photography) the delightful 1975 volume "Swan Watch" based on their neighbors on Aspatuck Creek, "Loh" and "Grin," a pair of Cygnus olor, which Buddy considered "the most regal of birds." More...

Not to worry...

...and thank you for the messages of concern.

It was not... at least I don't think it was... hostile action, but a server went bad somewhere and OtBB was inaccessible for a portion this week.

I think we're back and working properly....

I laughed, I cried...

...it was part of my Sunday afternoon!

I'm talkin' the San Diego Chargers/Denver Broncos AFC Divisional Playoff game on CBS, and one, I hasten to add, in which I had absolutely no rooting interest. More...

It would be less than gracious of me...

...t'were I to not mention that Westhampton Free Library... yes, that $7,827,820 edifice in our midst... and its irresistibly upbeat Director Danielle Zubiller, have been cited by the New York Library Association with its Outstanding Service to Libraries Award for their community action during and after Superstorm Sandy in late 2012.

Utterly devoid of snark, I applaud the recognition and can personally attest to Ms. Zubiller's neighborly nature and good will in the dark and unheated days following the storm.

In my never quite humble-enough opinion, richly deserved!

Cold? You want Cold ???

There being no mass shootings or airliner crashes of late, leading the news reports is the weather and the bitter cold.

Coldest Air in Decades Threatens to Freeze Pipes in South, East

Well, this is definitely cold weather, but it's got a ways to go before it reaches the extremes I survived in the Chicago area, Super Bowl weekend, 1985. More...

Sounds like one helluva town!

Here's a municipality in which you can raise hell on a Saturday night, and repent Sunday morning in your boots and blue jeans at the "Let'er Rip (Music and Ministry) Cowboy Church" of Chetwynd in northeastern British Columbia, Canada.

Chetwynd Church Directory sign listing Let'er Rip (Music and Ministry) Cowboy Church

Never heard of a "Cowboy church" before, but it seems to address the spiritual needs of cowpokes, wranglers and trail hands.

Jerry Coleman (1924-2014)

Gerald Francis "Jerry" Coleman

If we were sitting around over a beer and I said, "Name an American League baseball All Star who served in both WWII and Korea as a Marine fighter pilot," instinctively you'd blurt out, "Easy... Ted Williams."

You wouldn't be wrong, but the man I had in mind was Gerald Francis Coleman who died this morning, age 89, in San Diego, California. More...

Happy Birthday, Ham!

"That ol' Hambone" his late wife Ruthie used to say in what remained of her soft Southern drawl after the better part of six decades in the North.

Today that "ol' Hambone" turns 95 years of age, and at age 73, I deem that to be a helluva thing! More...

January Village Board Meeting

Short meeting of the Westhampton Beach Village Board this evening in which most of the attendees were there in support of the one Holiday Lighting awardee who braved the elements to make an appearance.

Two normally in attendance were missing: Trustee Patricia DiBenedetto and, because he was getting an early jump on keeping municipal thoroughfares open, Highway Superintendent John Kearns. More...

It's not 'Reality TV,' it's Cheap TV

It's everywhere! "American Idol," "Duck Dynasty," "Jersey Shore," "The X Factor," "Real Housewifes of..." wherever cosmetics are sold!

Production costs are minimized by not wasting money on non-essentials like writers or professional performers!

And it's not just a staple of English-speaking television... thank you, Simon Cowell, the second worst British import after Piers Morgan... but anywhere there's boob More...
