'Breaking Bad' broke great...

"Walter White" as "Heisenberg"

...and if you haven't seen last evening's series finale of cable AMC's "Breaking Bad," be warned:

Herein be spoilers!

Spread over 62 compelling episodes, it is the story More...

He wuz robbed!

Bryan Vera's corner should've dialed 9-1-1 as soon as the ring announcer read the scorecards and pronounced Julio César Chávez, Jr. the unanimous winner of their re-negotiated 10-round... it was supposed to be 12-rounds... 173-pound Super Middleweight fight in Carson, California last night.

The largely pro-Chávez crowd roundly boo'd the decision... they knew what they'd seen even if Judges Gwen Adair, Carla Caiz and Marty Denkin didn't. More...

Elyse loves to whine...

Sidwalk display in front of Beach Bakery.

...about any ol' thing, particularly about Code Enforcement in Westhampton Beach, and especially when she feels that it's being unevenly or "selectively" administered.

(Which, to hear Elyse tell it, is always!)

After this weekend though, she may have a case.

Simon Jorna's display on the Village portion of the sidewalk in front of Beach Bakery Cafe is going to amp up her whine to a frequency that will sterilize the frogs in Cranberry Marsh.

Detail of Simon's sidewalk display

And when she sees that Simon is competing directly... the gelato... with Shock Ice Cream, someone had better alert the closest cardiac care unit!

Do tell?

This just in from Westhampton-Hampton Bays Patch:

Jonesey's in Westhampton Beach Closes Its Doors

So this was "gossip," eh?

What are we, chopped liver?

Saw a little television commercial Sunday morning... not a lot of production values, minimal annimation and a less-than-catchy jingle... for Goldberg's Famous Deli in...

"Southampton ... East Hampton ... Montauk"

...and that was it, as the locations animation rolled out. No Westhampton Beach! More...

Carolyn Cassady (1923-2013)

Carolyn Robinson Cassady in Monte Sereno, California

Her obituary ran in The New York Times yesterday...

Carolyn Cassady, Beat Generation Writer, Dies at 90

...and as with much that is run in The Times, the headline was misleading.

Consort and muse to Beat writers, yes... wife of a Beat icon, absolutely!

And later, well after most of the "Beats" had moved on, yes, a writer of a pair of memoirs: More...

You'll excuse me if I'm feelin' a little...

America's Cup

...Rip Van Winklesque at the moment, but I just happened onto the NBC Sports channel which is cable-casting the America's Cup races between challenger New Zealand and defending champion United States, and my mind boggled!

What the hell happened to the beautiful sleek 12 Meter craft sailed by yachtsmen in white ducks and striped jerseys?

What are those high-tech AC72 catamarans they are sailing? No more classic wooden boats?

And the crew look more like they're racing NASCAR than sail boats! The craft themselves, with all those logos plastered on them... is this really what it's come to?

Seen on Seafield...

...just as calm and orderly as could be!

Seafield Lane, Westhampton Beach

Geese on parade. A lovely sight.

'Tis but a wee thing perhaps...

...but I'd rather not it have been Alex Rodriguez who broke Lou Gehrig's career record for grand slam home runs.

Gehrig, "The Pride of the Yankees," was a very, very special person who also happened to be a great baseball player. "Class all the way," my father, who was not given to such encomiums, said. More...

Paying respects to Traute

There will be a memorial service for Waltraut Gordon Miller this afternoon at 1:30 pm at Westhampton Cemetery.

Traute passed away at her adopted home in Florida in May.

Un uh, not this time!

The dead from Washington's Navy Yard shooting had barely breathed their last when Senator Dianne Feinstein (D, CA) rushed before the cameras to call for stricter gun laws.

Insisting that Monday's killings were caused by a man armed with an AR-15, a shotgun, and a semiautomatic handgun, her statement read, in part: More...

Date Night

Didn't plan it our... it was all spontaneously organic and one of the most successful evenings of the year.

It began at Six Corners with Woody Allen's "Blue Jasmine," which turned out to be one of the writer-director's strongest movies in years thanks to a stunning Oscar-caliber performance by Cate Blanchett.

(Not a Blanchett fan here, but she's so good one can't take their eyes off her even while wincing every frame she's on screen.) More...

I'm feelin' better about...

...my birth city (Beth Israel Hospital, Class of '40) today after seeing this news item:

Weiner, Spitzer out: Thank you New York

I haven't lived in New York City in nearly 50 years, so I really don't have any actual investment, emotional or otherwise, in the politics of the place. More...

What's wrong with this cover?

I have no idea of what Robin Williams and/or Sarah Michelle Geller did to incur the enmity of TV Guide's photographer or photo editor, but has anyone really looked at the cover of the current issue? More...

Desperate times on Montauk Highway

Me 'n' #141 go back a long way, almost six decades as a matter of fact, to the delightful days of Frank and Cyrus Biscardi and Papa Joe's, home of the only pizza in the Village... little matter that it was a "shell pie."

It's seen a lot of name changes over the decades, with varying degrees of success, and while the most recent incarnation, Jonesy's, née Micole's, has gone dark, it lasted four plus years over five Summers. More...

Seems reasonable to me...

...and I don't even live in Deer Trail, Colorado (pop. 546) where clearly there is an innate distrust of, if not Government in general, then of the Administration presently inside the Beltway.

Alarmed by Attorney General Eric Holder's opinion that it would be legal to, hypothetically, of course, kill American citizens on their own soil...

(Holder expressed his opinion in a response to Senator Rand Paul [R, KY] who had asked whether the Justice Department believed President Barack Obama More...

September Village Board Meeting

Very brief monthly meeting of the Westhampton Beach Village Board this evening, and as might be expected, nothing of great consequence was decided.

Approval was given to T-Mobile NorthEast LLC, successor to Omnipoint Communications Inc., to maintain the cellular tower in the steeple at Saint Mark's Church. More...

Shoe-Inn clears out!

I mean, not even an "End of Season Sale," just box it all up, back up the truck and take it all back to wherever the Shoe-Inn warehouse is located.

All of which means that the windows at 123 Main Street will soon be soaped-up or papered over.

Not a good look for the downtown area, especially while other retailers there are doing their best to keep the "season" going.

If'n they decide to return, mebbe someone can clue them in on how to spell Westhampton Beach.

Oops! Spoke too soon! (Thank you, Jackie!)

Tempus Fugit...

...or, but what have you done lately, Diana Nyad, née Sneed in New York City?

Yesterday, the 64-year-old endurance swimmer finally completed, on her fifth attempt, a 35-year quest to swim from Cuba to the United States without benefit of swim fins or protective shark cage.

Just now she was (briefly) a guest on CBS This Morning and was explaining to co-host Norah O'Donnell her personal mantra of "Find a way!" when Charlie Rose interrupted to tell her and the world:

"Sorry to interrupt, but we have Robert Kraft in the Green Room."

Kraft? Robert freaking Kraft?!? What has he done lately?

A story which begs for more details

Under the heading of "Anything that Happens in the Hamptons in the Summer deserves a Snappy NY Post Headline," this from July 25:

Mom’s fatal Jitney crash
Highway horror in the Hamptons

"Police would not disclose what caused the distraction and released few details on the crash."

Well, this week 27East had more, but still inadequate details in a report by Kyle Campbell: More...

If you didn't know he was a little nuts...

Ray Lewis

...long before this, then you haven't paid much attention to the just retired Baltimore Ravens ten-time All-Pro linebacker Ray Lewis!

(If nothing else, his ritual pre-game dance had to have told you that the man's taken w-a-a-a-y too many hits to the helmet during his 17-year career!)

This, however, has got to be the capper: More...
