The two best college basketball players…

...in the country during my Senior year at Adelphi, were both from New York, but only one played here, Barry Kramer, from Schenectady who played at NYU.

The other was Art Heyman, a kid from Manhattan who played high school hoops at Oceanside. His big rival wasn't Kramer, but Brooklyn-born Larry Brown, who played at Long Beach High School. More...

What a lady does not do…

...according to Mona Charen, a Conservative pundit and political analyst who is a syndicated columnist for, among other media, The Baltimore Sun.

I noted back in the '70s that the "Sexual Revolution" seemed to have passed me by, but for Charen, 17 years my junior, it not only missed her entirely, but she appears stunningly impervious to it having occurred at all. More...

Freedoms… Numerical Confusion

In preparing yesterday's OtBB entry about the Left Coastal views of our local eruv battles, I discovered that Jewish People Opposed to the Eruv has just launched a new Website, one that is heads and shoulders above its original Web presence.

(My compliments, Arnie, et al... if you had clue the first about how overdue this was, you'd've gone into your own pocket within a week of the blogspot's debut in 2008. Gawd, that was a visual horror and illegible to boot!) More...

The West Coast weighs in...

...on the on-going issue of the eruv chazerot which has turned Westhampton Beach and its environs into a religious war zone since it was first proposed before the Village Board in early 2008.

This round of words started ten days ago when an associate professor at Pepperdine University School of Law, Michael A. Helfand, authored a Los Angeles Times Op-Ed entitled:

An eruv in the Hamptons? Why not?

It is the professor's considered opinion that the More...

Matutinal Mayhem in Midtown Manhattan

(Credit for the snappy alliterative title goes to Tim de Illy.)

I haven't spend so much time glued to the TV set since April 19, 1994, when our Federal Government willfully incinerated 75 male, female and youth off-shoot Protestants in an effort to get one pedophile to surrender.

(It was the largest number of murders by fire since The Bronx' Happy Land arson four years earlier.)

As most now know, shots were fired in midtown Big More...

I hate it when...

...News12LI shows up anywhere near the area as their "news" coverage is generally substandard and superficial, commonly of the New York City tabloid-esque "let's show all our have-nots what The Hamptons are all about" variety!

The Wednesday evening meetings

At the monthly Village Trustees Work Session which started at 7:00 pm, nothing much happened.

Clerk of the Village Rebecca Molinaro took municipal notice of today's ruling by State Supreme Court Judge R. Bruce Cozzens that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's 0.34% payroll mobility tax is unconstitutional, and how it might impact Westhampton Beach which is moving to reclaim money "illegally" collected since 2009. Westhampton Beach Fire Department shield

...and it is furiously to be hoped that the presentation by the Westhampton Beach Fire District goes a helluva lot better than the last one held in this Village just over four years ago.

But then, Chairman of the Fire Commission, Frederick D. Overton (or, as we've always known him, "Fred") is no Joel Cohen so this should proceed smoothly. More...

Like a rhumba of rattlesnakes...

...a flange of LaRouche followers regularly show up with crudely-made signs and banners to pitch their card tables and petitions before the 11978 post office.

Today was one of those days:

Tuesday, August 21, 2012 @ 2:45 pm

Lyndon LaRouche (a/k/a "Lyn Marcus"), it may be recalled, is the once quadrennial Presidential candidate, paroled felon, economist, conspiracy theorist and political extremist who's less than three weeks shy of nonagenarian status.

You say 'po-tah-toe'...

Stoopid is as stoopid does

Updated 08/21/2012 – 12:57pm

...and right now I can't think of anyone more stoopid than suspended San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera who, in an attempt to avoid the mandatory sanction for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance, created a fake Website offering a non-existent product containing the prohibited drug.

The next step was to plead "Really? I didn't know..." in the vain hope that he would avoid the 50-game rip. More...

I did it... it was me!

Coda to last Tuesday's "Feedback..."

Not so Bissful after all...

Bissfully unaware...

...which is how one might characterize Micky Biss, who describes himself as "someone who owns a substantial amount of property in Westhampton Beach."

Biss is under the impression that he knows more about the legalities of land use because he "has developed several properties in both Miami and New York," and is apparently married to an attorney, and that together they know more than Village Attorney Richard Haefeli and Building Administrator Paul Houlihan, per this updated report by Erin More...

'Cheat, Cheat, Never Beat?'

Except that perhaps that old playground axiom should be revised to "Cheat, Cheat, Never Beat!"

Feedback...

...we get feedback! O, boy!, do we get feedback, be it via OtBB Comment, E-mail, 'Phone calls, Heliograph, or little notes in purple ink left on my doorstep.

It would seem that yesterday's discursive gripe about the unavailability of men's shorter-than-what-is-presently-in-vogue shorts, struck a responsive chord with a number of OtBB visitors, and despite my frustration with the knavish trickery of some Webmasters to lure me to their More...

Damn Liars!

Seven years back, I thought that Dockers Waterside was thoroughly unscrupulous for registering a Web address identical to The Peconic Baykeeper except that it used the .net domain instead of .org, and then duplicating the real Peconic Baykeeper's keywords for the .net site.

(Quick Tutorial: "keywords" are part of the Meta Tags that Webmasters place in a Webpage's header, visible only to Search Engines like Google, Yahoo! and Bing which Internet browsers use to find the Website with the information they seek.) More...

'Bourne #4' a poor legacy

I had actually been looking forward to the latest installment in "The Bourne Trilogy" but somewhere I seem to have disremembered that "tri" signifies three, and "The Bourne Legacy" is number four!

August Planning Board Meeting

Marvin Frederick Hamlisch

My former around-the-corner-on-Griffing Avenue neighbor, Marvin Hamlisch, age 68, died in Los Angeles on Monday "after a brief illness," according to the obits who write such things when they don't have any real information.

Forty years ago Hamlisch, off his triple Academy Awards coup for "The Way We Were" and "The Sting," was one of the hottest show business properties around, and before he was finished had also won another Oscar, four Emmys, a Grammy, a Tony, two Golden Globes and even a Pulitzer Prize. More...

New News on the Eruv

August Village Board Meeting

None of the anticipated contretemps came to pass during an orderly and relatively brief monthly Village Board meeting this evening with only developer Andrew Mendelson, as advertised, and his fellow Old Riverhead Road property owner Angelo dela Fuente speaking during Public Discussion.
