Who among us?

This morning's news headlines throughout the seventh state admitted to the Union:

Maryland State Police remove firearms from Sharpsburg home, suspect not found

While officials have yet to identify the "suspect," or reveal why "a huge amount of law enforcement officers... More...

Po' ol' Albert...

...Einstein, that is, not O'Connell, whose greatness could be measured by the number of quotations being misattributed to him.

Case in point an E-mail which has been making the rounds of the Internet this Fall linking to similar sites such as "The Day That Albert Einstein Feared May Have Finally Arrived" or "Technology overlaps Humanity." More...

My latest disgruntlement...

...is directed at the "premium" cable channels such as HBO, Showtime and Starz which have taken to ending episodes of series such as "Boardwalk Empire" or "Homeland" by directing viewers to their Websites...

"To uncover the truth you have to know where to look. Only the official Homeland site has the exclusive content you need to get the whole story and it's only at SHO.com and the official Showtime app for smartphones."

Yeah? Screw them! More...

Mama, don't let your babies...

Time was, a sweet young thing fell hard for the wrong guy and "things went too far," if he had a big mouth she got a bad rep in high school, maybe even 'round town. More...

Bryan Dean's SOS from Dubai

This desperate E-mail arrived Friday morning from the Middle East:

"I'm with family on vacation in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Black Friday...

(Jeanne, however, admits that when her two youngest were young and times were "tighter," she could be found outside Caldor, K-Mart or Wal-Mart at 5:00 am, elbows honed and a look of steely resolve on her face.) More...

Risen from the ashes of...

...the most recent business George Malamas got his hands on, behold Boom Burger!

Boom Burger

Nothing fancy, just the basics... and most importantly, it's one less vacant commercial premises not just in Westhampton Beach but on one of the Village's main thoroughfares.

G'luck to the Anthonys, Catanzaro and Cicogna.

The Wounded Warrior Project Redux

No to Wounded Warrior Project

Updated 11/19/2012 – 03:45 pm

The radio interview with WWP CEO/Executive Director Steve Nardizzi conducted by Tom Gresham yesterday on his GunTalk 'Netcast was very instructive, and is recommended listening for anyone considering supporting that charitable group.

Fortunately for Nardizzi, Gresham, as earlier noted, is a "peaceable man" (as opposed to some of the more combative interviewers in the mainstream media), but Nardizzi came off sounding like a three-card monte spieler on a street corner, and with the credibility of an ambulance-chaser with a client in a neck brace.

Gresham had some follow-up thoughts and insights on today's podcast.

The NHL is now dead to me!

The Commissioner's Office of the National Hockey League announced earlier this month that it had officially canked the only contest on ice left that I was actually still caring about!

NHL cancels Jan. 1 Winter Classic

Incredibly, with 327 regular season games through the end of this month having already been canceled in More...

The Wounded Warrior Project...

...an organization OtBB has been pleased to support in the past thanks to the local activism of young Derek Araujo, has taken a salvo this week for its stupidity and hypocrisy.

It began small Tuesday on my old colleage Tom Gresham's GunTalk Facebook page in a thread entitled "Wounded Warrior Project Email Exchange," and took off from there.

The gist of the controversay is that when Gresham invited the Wounded Warrior Project to join him on his Veteran's Day radio broadcast and talk about their work, their More...

Upon Reflection...

First Edition cover

...it was times such as during the past fortnight when I felt like the men on the American nuclear submarine USS Scorpion in Nevil Shute's (purely coincidentally) post-apocalyptic novel "On the Beach," cut off from the rest of the world (as they knew it) and not even sure what's left out there.

And like Stanley Kramer's grim 1959 film version with Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner, when I looked out the window during the first few days of "Superstorm" (thank you, Andy Cuomo!) Sandy, it almost felt like a black and white world. More...

Paula Broadwell Cosmetic Tip

Paula Broadwell on TV

For the love of Pete Klotz, would someone please send this woman an economy-size compact of Max Factor face powder before she goes on camera again!

The glare from her forehead is über-distracting.

Life after 'Magic’s'

Not sure how many are left who might still remember Jack O'Connell who served as, among other capacities, bartender at the old Oliver Twist Inn and doorman at Magic's Pub, and who has long pursued a career as an actor.

(We actually appeared as "background actors" in "Rocket Gibraltar" together when it filmed here in 1987.) More...

Another Dolans scam

Anyone who is a member of "Optimum Rewards" is by now familiar with the E-mail with the subject line:

Day 12 Diary, and perhaps I should...

...just suck it up and stop counting.

Yesterday, after spending close to 25 minutes on hold on LIPA's "Report a Downed Wire" line, I received the absolute assurances yesterday of a Mrs. Diaz that our power would be back by Saturday at the very latest.

(But then, I make it 14-to-five that Mrs. Diaz would say the same thing even if her hair was on fire.) More...

Thanks, Fred...

...your insights and leadership qualities as one of our elected State officials are nothing less than stunning.

Never was this more apparent than this pithy glimpse into the obvious, courtesy of 27East:

"State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele said Friday afternoon that residents should limit their driving to conserve gas."

Way to step up, Fred! About on a par with your annual, and pathetically ineffectual, messages about the elevated gasoline prices on the East End

Friday, November 02, 2012

There is a difference between...

...Westhampton Beach and Quogue, but then the late T. Decker Orr had assured me of that decades ago.

Where it became abundantly apparent this week was in the manner that each municipality's law enforcement personnel dealt with the lines of gasoline-seekers at the 11959 Hess station on the corner of Montauk Highway and Jessup Avenue, and the 11978 Valero retailer on Montauk Highway at Old Riverhead Road.
