A good guy gone...

...Charles Palmer, who had been in poor health for a number of years, passed away yesterday. Condolences to his widow Carol and the entire Palmer family.

Visitation with be 2:00-4:00 pm and 7:00-9:00 pm January 2nd at Follett & Werner Funeral Home, with a Mass at Immaculate Conception on Quiogue, 11:00 am January 3rd.

Totally Charmed!

I'm not even sure how this little video crossed OtBB's radar, but when I played it, I was, you guessed it, "totally charmed!"

I'm only vaguely aware of either Zooey Deschanel or Joseph Gordon-Levitt who, following a little research at the world's greatest Website, I discover have both just entered their 30s and have an impressive list of film and television credits. More...

Here's somethings I did not know about...

...the "city of Westhampton Beach," starting with, of course, the startling and sudden upgrade in its municipal status.

And if one were to trust the accompanying map, while Gary Vegliante was otherwise engaged, crafty ol' Con Teller annexed the entirety of West Hampton{sic} Dunes!

The link was thoughtfully provided by Google Alerts, and you'd be amazed (and sometimes appalled) at what that service turns up on any given subject you might specify.

Before she vacationed here...

Age 17. Who is she?

...in the Summers, this was how the Texas-born, Kansas-educated young woman appeared in a family portrait during her late teens.

She began her celebrated entertainment career as a dancer and during the Roaring '20s wound up at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway before the cameras of Hollywood beckoned. More...

Everything about the eruv...

...as it pertains to Westhampton Beach, is now available, indexed, on the Village's Website.

It's a reasonably thorough documentation, from the eruv chatzerot as originally proposed in early 2008, to what appears to be the most recent version. More...

That's why they play the game!

Or, as the cliché popularized by Al Pacino in the (dreadful) movie of the same name goes: "On any given Sunday...."

On paper... as always, it's "on paper..." the smart money was on the undefeated Packers and against the winless Colts. More...

What was it Malcolm X said...

"President Kennedy never foresaw that the chickens would come home to roost so soon1...."

Big News from my State Senator

Well, I'm assuming it's "big news" because Senator Ken LaValle's office just issued, via E-mail, a Press Release announcing that Mario's little boy Andy has signed into law a bill that our State Senator had co-sponsored.

In essence, the legislation, according to LaValle's "spin staff," prevents health insurers from requiring plan members to order prescription drugs from mail-order pharmacies. More...

'Around the Beach' Part 2

Being further reflections on Lisa Fox's Video Webcast, live and in semi-surround-sound from somewhere South of Old Country Road in bucolic uptown Speonk.

(Well, it was "live" Thursday evening, but through the miracle of digital technology, it's still viewable at "Around the Beach with Lisa Fox.") More...

Say it ain't so, Ryan!

Los Angeles Dodgers

It's no secret that I'm a Dodgers fan... Brooklyn, Los Angeles... hasn't mattered, I root for the team once known as "Dem Bums."

So I was also rooting for the Dodgers Matt Kemp to win the National League's Most Valuable Player award after the remarkable season he produced in 2011.

But that was not to be... for all of Kemp's terrific More...

The question on everyone's mind...

Rod Blagojevich

...as the 40th Governor of Illinois prepares for his 14-year prison sentence:

"Rod, how are ya gonna keep your hair like that in the slammer?"

As of today, his 55th birthday, the disgraced politician has just under seven weeks to get his affairs in order before he enters the Illinois State Corrections system.

One of those matters might be exploring a more prison-appropriate coiffure.

Almost unnoticed...

...at this week's Village Board meeting (except by Southampton Press Western Edition reporter Lisa Finn on 27East,) was the changing of the guard within the Westhampton Beach Police Benevolent Association.

The election of Officer Steven McManus as the PBA's new President not only marks a sea change in the labor union, but was as recently as 18 months ago as unthinkable as the Boston Red Sox punting a nine game lead over the last four weeks of the 2011 season. More...

'Around the Beach' Video Webcast

Tipped by an OtBB reader that developer Andrew Mendelson was going to be this week's guest on Lisa Fox's "Around the Beach" Internet videocast, I joined the Vokle.com site to see "which" Mendelson would show up.

December Village Board Meeting

Instead of the first Thursday of the month, the regular meeting of the Westhampton Beach Village Board was postponed 'til this evening... appropriately the 70th anniversary of the Japanese "Sneak Attack" on Pearl Harbor.

There were two Public Hearings noticed, one the annual plea from Family Counseling Service during which Executive Director Judith Margolis made another of her More...

...to make the current Village administration's reluctance to make Zoning changes so as to permit a supermarket in the Business 3 and Industrial 1 districts a wedge issue in the 2012 Westhampton Beach elections.

The latest "shot" across the Village's bow comes in the form of an open letter from the group's law firm over the signature of Frank A. Isler, and it has initially been published by the local Patch. More...

Reunited!

I remember it vividly though it was in late 1965 in one of my regular stops at the time, Lillian and Bud Leimsidor's Music Mart in the building on Sunset Avenue presently occupied by Asian Fusion!

Among other items, they sold albums... actual honest-to-introduced-in-1948-by-Columbia Records 33-1/3 rpm vinyl phonograph albums, and the one which commanded my attention that day was entitled "Folksong '65." More...
