Something for which I'm thankful

Well, there's many things, actually, but uppermost in my mind at the moment is that I'm soooooooo glad I'm not a New York Mets fan.

Many know I followed the inept Detroit Lions for over half-a-century, but that was mostly from a distance and with one exception never for more than for 12-16 games a year. More...

RKO on TMC

Me 'n' the movies go way back, and while the short-term memory has proved problematic this year, the long-term is still locked-in and solid, especially in matters cinematic.

Some films from my youth have stayed with me over the decades, and cable channel TCM had one of my favorites from '51 during its September tribute to Claude Rains. More...

The Bill and Eliot Show

I really don't like Bill Maher, and it's not just his politics which I find well-to-the-left of Janeane Garafalo or even that old Bolshevik Pete Seeger.

And I've never felt any love for disgraced former New York State Governor Eliot Spitzer who somehow avoided criminal prosecution1 after his March 2008 resignation. More...

The 'Main' Thing...

Updated 09/28/2009 – 04:56 pm

...is that the downtown section of the Village around Library Avenue and Main Street be avoided while a natural gas leak be addressed.

Natural Gas Leak on Library Avenue

Village Police and the Fire Department are on the scene and in the process of attempting to contain the escaping gas by pouring water on the breach. More...

Booooo! to Cablevision, Chapter 47

My personal litany of well-documented gripes about Cablevision goes back over 40 years, and its still a sore subject!

Currently, they're dragging their feet getting the Village Meetings cablecast, and they have yet to bring back or replace the excellent Voom group of channels they ripped untimely from our HD line-up in January! More...

Date Night

My wife, having been a ministering angel of mercy these past two-plus weeks, wanted a night out, which boon I could not deny her.

Plus, two solid weeks of nebulizing every four hours and five good nights of sleep, and I was ready to haul myself off my bed of pneumonia thorns. More...

September Trustees Work Session

It was "boys' night" at the Village Board as Trustees Toni Jo Birk and Joan Levan were missing from the front of the meeting room.

Most conspicuously absent was the Empress of Oneck who, at the September Village Board Meeting, had asked Mayor Conrad Teller to hold over for further discussion the contentious... thank you, Simon Jorna and Elyse Richman!... issue of outdoor music. More...

Jerk, in the First Degree

Updated 09/23/2009 – 02:32 am

That would be former New Jersey Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress who has now started a two-year jail sentence which, if he's capable of accumulating "good time," means he'll be incarcerated for the next 18-20 months.

His offenses are multiple, beginning with being a jerk, and then compounding that by being cheap... almost terminally so. More...

Low Key Fundraiser

We're in the election cycle and as surely as night follows The Jay Leno Show, comes the candidates' meetings and fundraisers.

Jeanne and I attended an uncommonly "low key" event earlier at Stone Creek Inn in East Quogue, held by Town Trustee candidates Chris Garvey and Bill Pell. More...

Birthdays... eccch!

Updated 08/20/2009 – 11:45 pm

I had one this weekend, and as birthdays go, it was all right.

I didn't celebrate it, or really even observe it. It was Saturday, my wife had worked much of the day at one of her clinics, and so 'twas I who took her out that evening. More...

Get Well, Rosie!

Within hours of our last conversation Thursday morning, Rosemary Towers, assistant to Mayor Conrad Teller at Village Hall, was felled by a cerebral event.

She was discovered, unconscious, during a noontime break by her husband Tim of the DPW, and wound up at University Hospital in Stony Brook after a brief stop-over at Peconic Bay Medical Center.

Her sister-in-law Lori reports that she is more alert and in the process of what looks to be a long-haul recovery.

White light and good thoughts to the House of Towers for a full recovery for Rosie.

In Appreciation of Mencken's Creed

I didn't know much about the [celebrated/reviled... take your pick] "Sage of Baltimore," Henry Louis Mencken during his lifetime... he died at age 75 when I was still mid-teens.

A decade later, noting that Mencken and I shared a birth date... today... a friend passed on a 1948 volume of his writing, "A Mencken Chrestomathy," and I was hooked. More...

Frightened little people

Although OtBB sometimes attracts them in squadrons, I cannot abide them.

They are timorous and small of spirit, those who whisper behind the back of their hand or cower behind drawn curtains, and tremulously expect that someone else should have the courage of their conviction. More...

The NYCOM Opinion

Six Corners' Stonewall

As reported last Thursday, Village Attorney Hermon Bishop disclosed that a response to the Village's inquiry about the challenges on Election Day, had been received from NYCOM.

Apparently this came as something of a shock to recently re-elected Trustees Hank Tucker and Joan Levan who demanded to know why they hadn't received their copies of NYCOM's opinion. More...

September Village Board Meeting

Updated 09/04/2009 – 07:32 pm

Short (32 minutes) meeting, modestly attended, and no real fireworks about which to blog.
